When You Started In This Industry...

Did you have a game plan beyond just making some money?

Depending on who you talk to, some wanted the following...
1. Work in Porn Industry because "it's Cool".
2. Make Better Money than You Could in the Real World.
3. Freedom to Be Your Own Boss.
4. Be the Bill Gates of Porn (innovation/riches).
5. Simply Fell Into It by Screwing Around Online,Led to Affiliate,.. Program, etc..

The point being, did you have a plan, or did you simply follow the money?

pornguy 11-02-2010 01:58 PM

A bit of all for me.

ottopottomouse 11-02-2010 02:29 PM

1. Never considered whether anything I have done "is cool".
2. Less motivated by money than by being happy with what i'm doing.
3. Own boss doesn't matter - I can work quite well under pressure from someone else too.
4. Not sure i'd want the negative attention Bill Gates gets.
5. Yep. Did a lot of reading first rather than diving in blind though.

When I first started working in the industry I was a few months shy of turning 19. I didn't have a game plan, I wasn't looking that far ahead. I was attracted to the dark side because knew there was potential to make bigger bucks than I could make elsewhere, and to be honest, as a young punk rock kid I knew it was an industry where I wouldn't be as scrutinized for my appearance.

czarina 11-02-2010 02:37 PM

I had a plan since the beginning, but things changed rapidly and I had to change paths, so I pretty much followed the money after that. It's been a great ride so far and wouldn't trade it for anything!

goldflower 11-02-2010 02:37 PM

Girls , Girls , Girls :) :) :)

fuzebox 11-02-2010 02:39 PM

No plan, I just wanted to make money on my own so I could quit my dayjob... Tried a half dozen things and porn is the only one that stuck.

Yngwie 11-02-2010 02:39 PM

When I started in this industry I didn't know a damn thing. I just figured that it couldn't hurt to try something different and learn something new.

Roald 11-02-2010 02:41 PM

Followed the money! Friend of mine in uni had loads and he showed me how to do it.

Wizzo 11-02-2010 02:45 PM

When I started, I was just messing around trying to improve my skill set by learning some html as the whole internet was fairly new, found an article about porn, found porncity free host and made a 10pic tgp gallery with 2 Kara's Playground banners and submitted it anywhere I could find.

That gallery made me like $450 and it was on like DonkeyKong! :pimp

For me it was more about 'freedom'. Both creatively, and realistically.

I made good money in telco, and was already working online part time making a decent $X,XXX with a few hours after work. However, I am a creative person who simply does not work well being micromanaged in corporate America.

candyflip 11-02-2010 04:02 PM

When I started I just wanted something to make some extra money. I loved my job at the time, but it soon became a chore to go to work knowing I could sit home and make twice as much. So...I built my first sites and galleries and Yahoo groups from Work, getting paid to work on my own shit. I managed to do that for almost a year before they caught on...

At that point I was without a job and and needed to come up with an actual plan.

Jeremiasz 11-02-2010 04:06 PM

Started in 1999 :) I was 17 it was pure about money... in 2001 i was owner of biggest porn site in Poland :)

But i prefer to earn in $ ;)

LeRoy 11-02-2010 04:08 PM

#5 for me. I was pimpin hoes on CL and this seemed a bit better.

So I dove right in.

StinkyPink 11-02-2010 04:10 PM

I was sick and tired of looking at TGP's with wrong galleries in all the categories. So I decided I would make the ultimate TGP with real galleries in each category. Never knew how hard it would be to run a TGP and maintain it to my quality standards. Gave up on that when I learned you could make money submitting galleries. Went on to build galleries and was sure to submit them to the right categories. So I did my part to solve the problem I seen in the online adult biz.

I don't submit galleries anymore.

I was an REO (foreclosure) agent that was running 16 hours a day. After my third to last surgery in '08 I no longer had the energy I did before but got bored lying around so here I am.

Shot some porn in '02 but the group of us had issues back then ... in short was part of the entourage of a rich guy who started a porn company but we partied more than anything. Profit was never a motivator; having fun was.

First online business was loan lead generation. My partners worked directly with a bunch of banks and we'd post non-exclusive leads directly to their servers and then invoice them and get paid. That dried up and they now do the same thing for bankruptcy lawyers but I'm not around for that. I didn't make much because they provided the relationships and platform but I had to do everything else. I was working full-time at the time and was barely making enough to support myself so there wasn't much left over to invest in the business. They made and are making a killing though.

I never have a plan until after I start something and it works. I'm one of those throw it against the wall and see if it sticks types. Throw enough and something will stick. I rely a lot on intuition and luck and it seems to work well enough for me.

I wanted to be in this industry since I was 16, which was the mid-90's. I cannot help but to think how much I could have done if I started when I wanted to.

spazlabz 11-02-2010 04:19 PM

I got into the biz because I thought it would be a fun way to make a living... it has not disappointed. I did not enjoy getting up and getting ready and then going to work around people I didn't like in order to earn a buck. Most people I have met in this industry is very easy to spend time with.

Calico Jack 11-02-2010 04:22 PM

Fell into it really, started something for fun, it started paying so I kept on going. Learnt the hard way but it was worth it.

bolsex 11-02-2010 04:37 PM

I discovered adult biz while wank!!!
Joined ARS and started!
It was in 1999 (I think)

Number five...then learned there was money to be made...so I invested some money into it...made money from it and sold it several years ago. It never was my primary business...but brought in a few hundred thousand a year extra with me doing little to nothing to earn it.

d-null 11-02-2010 04:40 PM

back in the early 90s I was experimenting with photoshop on Macs when that part of professional stripping and publishing started the early transition from old style stripping and layout, and did a lot of promo stuff for strippers and progressed from there, we then were starting to do some design work for the web with mainstream when it was still in the Mosaic days and had no clue what we were working with at the time..... cd's and "multimedia" on cd's was the supposed big thing at the time and a lot of energy was wasted on those

Rochard 11-02-2010 04:46 PM

I had just graduated from college with my little compute tech degree, only to discover in the last six months the dot com bubble had burst and there was no computer jobs in California. That's when an "online friend of mine" who had worked with me on a few "picture sites" offered me a job - Steve Lightspeed.

In all honestly, I liked what I saw when I flew out to meet him person to person. But I really thought it would be a temp job, six months or so, to establish myself outside of California where the cost of living was high and into Phoenix where the cost of living was lower.

I had no idea this was going to be a full time gig.

i was making 125K as an engineer...i decided to quit that and do adult...
you bet i had a plan...

frankie_gunn 11-02-2010 07:05 PM

I got into it because i was in need of resources; so i decided to satisfy one of the people's basic needs.

And i had a simple plan: to offer people my 'product' through YouTube and search engines.

Zorgman 11-02-2010 07:12 PM

Getting 0.04c per click just seemed so easy. Thanks TopBucks :)
That's how I started.

SallyRand 11-02-2010 07:13 PM

Got my first adult check about two years ago but the check which I have framed is a bad check from Media Breakaway signed by Scott Richter.

I was producing and selling VHS vids via the mail. Then this 'internet' thing came about, and I though... Cool A new place to advertise my WHS vids and then sell them by mail order lol

One thing led to another and here I am at 41 years old, having travelled the world and semi retired - Only working if and when I choose to :)

No biz plan... But fuck me... I'm happy...
