News Corp to MySpace: Shape Up or Ship Out

Quote:

?We?ve been clear that MySpace is a problem.?

?The current losses are not acceptable or sustainable.?

They must show improvement in ?in quarters, not in years.?

News Corp. president Chase Carey spoke to investors earlier this week and everyone is talking about it. He made it clear that the 70 million drop in ad and search revenue wasn?t going to be tolerated and that without a major improvement MySpace?s days were numbered.

MySpace has been dead for years as a competitor in the social networks.
:2 cents:

MySpace needs a complete overhaul

not very user friendly, facebook is, if i could compare it to something its like the geocities of interfaces.

im sure someone will buy it then redirect the traffic or mail the hell out of the users.

NaughtyRob 11-04-2010 07:57 PM

They are dead in the water.

Right. Starting with their code.

It's loaded with errors, crashes out, spyware, etc.. I do not know anyone who openly admits they use MySpace anymore.

they should ditch allowing ppl to customize their profile pages 1st

still has alexa 35 and is great for music. they just have to make the design more minimal, kill all the clunky custom layouts and ten music players loading when you open the page and focus on the entertainment/artist aspect.

I'd agree if that wasn't the reason they had grown to what they were in the first place. They should just remove the ability to openly CSS one's profile and just have an interface where people can change appearance. They should do away with allowing autoplaying videos or music for that matter too.

Agent 488 11-04-2010 08:07 PM

supposedly they gave it a huge overhaul but if pages like this still exist what did they do?

they could easily kill custom layouts now.

True that did spur a lot of growth but people are now used to not being able to change their profile because of facebook. If they wanted to they could get a few 1000 profile types made and host them themselves which should cut down on slow loading pages that rely on loading graphic after graphic from 3rd party websites.

Something like that...I realize that people are used to FB now but changing MySpace to be exactly like Facebook would be a huge mistake given they would have to somehow regain people. TBH I'm not even sure they shouldn't just rehaul it into a completely new site and do away with a profile site altogether...there hasn't really been a case yet of a social media site dropping off the map that's been able to regain stature.

I know News Corp owns it, you missed my point totally.

myspace is dead and full of spammers. sell it off now and cut your losses :2 cents:

minicivan 11-05-2010 11:01 AM

myspace is like any business that rocketed to success due to circumstances and not by design (i.e. facebook). bad habits become institutional as does a general lack of direction, innovation and poor concept of why users are there to begin with and what their actual needs are.

GTS Mark 11-05-2010 12:36 PM

Facebook should buy Myspace and integrate the music portion of Myspace into Facebook.

That's one area on Facebook that is sorely lacking.

myneid 11-05-2010 12:44 PM

Myspace is rolling out a complete re-vamp of everything this month

they are not trying to compete with myspace but trying to bring themselves into a whole new niche.

they are still pretty huge with music and band sites and a lot of their revamp focuses on that.

i think it looks promising
