Genesis - A Musical Revelation in Videos - Enjoy...

Today is the first day in over a month that I have been able to relax a little. I've been busy almost non-stop with various projects, large and small, and at last I have a little time for myself...

Therefore, I decided to play some reflective music. Genesis has been one of my favorite bands for decades, so I put several of their CDs in my player and hit the random play button.

The first song that played, is one of the most beautiful and melancholic songs I know of, Ripples:

As a young guitarist, I loved playing hard rock, but also enjoyed listening to what was referred to as Progressive Rock, which was a sub-genre of music personified by bands such as Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, The Moody Blues, and Yes.

Genesis first came to my attention in the early 70's. The first song I remember hearing was "The Musical Box" off of the Nursery Cryme album (Peter Gabriel looks so young in this video):

For sheer talent and mastery of their instruments, and haunting melodies, Genesis quickly became one of my favorite of the Progressive Rock bands. They were also one of my favorite bands to get stoned and listen to, as well, with their at times profound, at times trippy, lyrics:

Many people are familiar with the latter day 1980's Phil Collins led Genesis line-up, but my favorite period was when Peter Gabriel was the front man for the band. To me, Genesis reached their apex with their epic double album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" (this is a Genesis cover band performing an amazingly faithful version of Lamb):

AWESOME videos ADG!!!

"Watcher of The Skies" would be nice, too. :)

I LOVE "progressive rock": Yes, ELP, Genesis, and my all-time favorite: Jethro Tull. The first 7 Moody Blues albums, too. And Pink Floyd! And King Crimson, and Traffic, and - and - oh, it's almost endless.

Peter Gabriel-era Genesis is Genius.

I love how Bill Bruford steals the band's thunder on "Second's Out" version of "The Cinema Show", heh...

Quentin 11-09-2010 03:14 PM

Ah.... the GOOD Genesis.

My wife refused to believe there was such a thing -- until I played the first side of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway for her.

She just kept asking "This is Genesis? Are you sure?" heheh

Rochard 11-09-2010 03:17 PM

I love Genesis, but I just don't get anything before "Seconds Out".

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 11-09-2010 03:17 PM

A very rare version of Genesis performing their magnum opus, the 22-minute "Supper's Ready":

The "Phil Collins era" can be a guilty pleasure as well...

What beautiful choices! A real pleasure to listen to them in today's musical chaos.

I stand corrected!

I gotta admit that I recently saw "Genesis - Live At Wembley Stadium" (1988) on television and it was kind of a downer.

hershie 11-09-2010 03:38 PM

Try to keep current and do enjoy recent talent like Arcade Fire, Radiohead...but nothing gets played more on my ipod then early Genesis. Was fortunate to have seen them live back then too several times.

Both eras of Genesis (Gabriel and Collins) were laden with great music:

Steve Hackett is one of the greatest guitarists of our time:

Not that it matters.... but a relatively infrequently noted fact is that Hackett was among the first rock guitarists (if not the first) to employ the two-handed tapping/fretting technique that became highly popular in the late 70s.

This and other completely useless factoids are yours free -- courtesy of what remains of my rapidly failing memory. ;-)

The amazing thing is that Steve Hackett is a self-taught guitarist (as I am, although he has incredible talent, and I am a hack, lol).

Steve Hackett solo from "Firth of Fifth:

...and the whole piece:

I presume then that you like John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra) too. He once jammed with Jimi Hendrix (my favorite guitarist) from 2am to 8am non-stop. What I would have given to be a fly on the wall at that session...

Love that first song!!! Thanks for posting the vids!

mekent 11-09-2010 06:14 PM

Thank you for making me feel so fucking old...

Nursery cryme was my first Genesis album, yes a real album...

And it's still my favorite.

Two others that I still listen to are "a trick of the tail" and "wind and wuthering"

I was lucky enough to sit and talk with Genesis when they did a meet and greet at Peaches in Florida way back in 1978

I have seen Genesis and Pete Gabriel live several times. I took my Mother to a Peter Gabriel show at the smallish San Jose Civic a few years before she passed away, and it was so fun because the band assembled at the back of the hall and then marched through the audience to the stage, and we tagged along right behind them. My Mom got a real kick out of that.

Ironically, Genesis with Phil Collins was playing the same night at a large arena in Oakland, and so Peter Gabriel thanked the audience at his show for choosing to attend his show, by doing an extra long medley of old Genesis songs:

That is excellent that you could meet and speak with the band... :thumbsup

One of the favorite cuddle songs of my wife and I, from "A Trick of the Tail":

Thanks for 'Watchers of the Skies" ADG!

BP - Before Porn - I was a music journalist for many magazines. I interviewed Phil Collins in 1995, I think, for some east coast local magazine. We put him on the cover. I also interviewed Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford in 1988, for another publication. Great times! Never interviewed Gabriel, tho. :(

Collins-era Genesis stopped being worthwhile after Invisible Touch. There were some great moments on there, but there were more over-the-top '80's pop songs for my taste. They were giddy with their MTV success at that time, too, Collins and I spoke about that ten years later. They were more interested in videos than the music, but at that point (like many '60's/'70's British rockers) they had been "in the game" for upwards of fifteen+ years.

Still, listen to 'Mama' from Genesis, their self-titled album from 1983. Brilliant shit! (I'm sure you have, and know it well.)

Ahhh....but then there's 'I Can't Dance". Shudder shudder. LOL

CaptainHowdy 11-09-2010 07:39 PM

MisterPeabody ROCKS... The YouTube videos are not really flattering, go check an album (the best medium for this cultural product).

Old Genesis was great, but my all time fave has always been Yes...

Only 25 more posts, and I can post links, too.

I agree, albums are the best. I deliberately selected live versions of the songs posted here, since Genesis fans already have their albums.

Many of these videos I had not seen before. Genesis was not a very commercial band in the 70's, so except for rare airtime on FM radio, their songs, especially the longer ones, were not played much, let alone videos of them, since they were created pre-MTV.

Thanks for posting this thread, brings back so many great memories. So many great clips.

I was dragged to a concert back in the early 70s. It was a new band and had never heard of them. Then Genesis came on and bought every album since and been to every concert I could get to. Last time was in Prague 3-4 years ago. Great night.

Yup -- I'm a major McLaughlin fan. I'm particularly fond of the first live Shakti album. IMO, that album has some of the most amazing lead guitar work ever recorded on an acoustic guitar. The clarity of each individual note, the dynamic range, the tone... all simply out of this world.

I'm not as into McLaughlin's more recent recorded work, but I will still go see him live any chance I get. It has been a while since I last caught him, which was in a quintet with Dennis Chambers on drums and Pino Palladino on bass.... pretty amazing show.

One of the best concerts I ever attended was a twinbill featuring Mahavishnu Orchestra (touring in support of Visions of the Emerald Beyond), and Jeff Beck (touring in support of Blow By Blow). Both John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck, came out and jammed during each other's performance - pure guitar magic.
