i have just figured out what was making the stupid sound, and misery loves company.

I use a program called QIP Infium (http://www.qip.ru) it is very stable. I got it back when they had an english language version of the site but now it is all in Russian. There are no advertisements and they have a pretty cool spam blocker thing where a person who is not on your contact list will have to answer a question before you see the message

OMG why dont you use for icq any alternative client? Miranda or QIP??

i heard some ugly rumours that people weren't getting all their messages, and it had caused some issues

This is why I am refusing to let ICQ "upgrade" me past 6.5 build 1042. I have all the banners removed, all the bullshit removed, able to resize my message window etc.. As soon as they "upgrade" this, it'll be a huge pile of shit once again.

i actually have a pretty neat ICQ7 set up

used the banner removal tool, and changed the weird looking icons next to contacts. it's pretty good.

Well, if it comes down to it I'll bookmark the banner remover. At least they are on top of it and release them as fast as ICQ.
