Bird Flu is back!

HONG KONG (AFP) ? Hong Kong scrambled Thursday to contain any outbreak of bird flu after recording its first human case of the illness since 2003, a 59-year-old woman now in a serious condition in hospital.

The government raised the teeming city's avian influenza alert level to "serious", meaning there is a "high risk" of contracting the potentially fatal disease, a spokesman for the Department of Health told AFP.

Hong Kong recorded its last human case of bird flu in 2003, and had the world's first major outbreak among humans in 1997, when six people died of a then-unknown mutation of the virus.

"Bird flu" is a phrase similar to "swine flu," "dog flu," "horse flu," or "human flu" in that it refers to an illness caused by any of many different strains of influenza viruses that have adapted to a specific host. All known viruses, similar to cases diagnosed on gfy, that cause influenza in birds belong to the species influenza A virus. All subtypes (but not all strains of all subtypes) of influenza A virus are adapted to birds, which is why for many purposes avian flu virus is the influenza A virus (note that the "A" does not stand for "avian").

There is only one cure or remedy....

who killed that bird?

Uh, wrong flu!

Your site refers to H1N1; "Swine Flu". "Bird Fly" is H5N1 and a completely different and often fatal bug.

Now, if we can assume that Big Pharma is already on the case producing vaccines by the barrel, they should be well into distribution in a matter of weeks which means 2011 Q1 earnings statements should be off the charts!

Invest now and game the gamers (but jesus, don't get the shot)!!

The problem with H5N1 is that it is showing the ability for human-to-human transmission, possibly indicating a mutation. If a vaccine is developed for the bird-to-human strain, that vaccine will be ineffective against the mutated human-to-human strain. In any case, it takes about six months do produce an effective vaccine and total world-wide vaccine production capacity would only provide vaccine for about 600 million people.

A person exposed in say, Hong Kong could be in New York City or Mexico City or even Berlin or Paris in less than 36 hours and there ya go!

It is not a question of if a virus will run but only rather WHEN a virus will run. The last serios pandemic was in 1918 and it killed over 20 million world-wide. The exact number is unknown due to the lack of adequete reporting but the death toll could really have been closer to 50 million. Today such a pandemic might kill billions.
