Track your members - a freeby tip
What the hell - it's a weekend and I'm feeling kinda crappy, so I'll share a proven idea with those that care to read the post... it stems from the same idea as you see on Amazon - "people that bought this also bought...", but requires your own initiative to apply to your own members (and non-/ex-members)
I've harped on soooo many times about the need for a well-designed central database. If you own lots of content, then you have/should have a major central dbase controlling all that, split into tables, titles, scenes, categories, talent, cats, popularity and so forth. Once/if you have that you have total power. setup one db for surfers, one for members, then track them to the hilt - all tracking is done via a video id, but from that you can descend a db at any higher point to pull that vid (and vice versa) So, I'm a member and I watch vid id 1990 that contains talent 1,8,26,79,99 in categories 5,11,16 Immediately, I can offer that member "Other videos you may like" then show videos showing talent 1 appearing in cats 5,11,16 talent 8 appearing in cats 5,11,16 etc And those will be the top vids to show in a carousel, but then you could expand that carousel to show eg vids that other members that had seen that vid went on to see (if not in the above list). Add a tracker to if member clicks on the suggested links or not, and you have an idea of %interaction with what you suggest. If you have a massive catalogue available to members, then they'll use this, cos it's showing them what they like to watch, rather than trying to find it. Next, surfers. This is a gold mine and use it however you want, tubes and all. You have a db of trailers to show and you track them like above - once you've got enough stats you will see what trailers/tube vids are working (screw that "rate this vid" thing - get raw stats). Graphing your raw data help for this a lot. Once you know which model/cats combos work (hell even which models *or* cats) for your traffic, target that to the max. A subtle way is to "suggest" vids like above, but tag on another param, one that more plays on the member join (ads, overlays whatever). You may not realise it at first and the above examples are only simple examples, but once you've got a few month's worth of tracking data and started plotting them (regular online graphing classes), you'll really see what works and what has a less of an impact. You are the marketing guys and know how to capitalise on this shit, but data *is* the key to direction.... </freeby> add ideas at will.... |
oh yeah - ex-members I mentioned them at the beginning... same stuff, a monthly digest to expired members that haven't opted out of email telling them of the new vids (include trailer paths) of stuff you think they like ;)
