Two richest men in the world think top 1% need to pay more taxes

Warren Buffet and Bill Gates have each publicly stated that the rich should pay more in taxes. Buffet has gone so far as to say that the rich have never had it better than now.

Quote:

"I think that people at the high end, people like myself, should be paying a lot more in taxes. We have it better than we've ever had it," he told ABC's Christiane Amanpour in a clip played on "This Week" on Sunday.

When Amanpour pointed to critics' claims that the very wealthy need tax cuts to spur business and capitalism, Buffett replied, "The rich are always going to say that, you know, 'Just give us more money, and we'll go out and spend more, and then it will all trickle down to the rest of you.' But that has not worked the last 10 years, and I hope the American public is catching on."
Quote:

Buffett isn't the only billionaire who has argued for higher taxes. Both Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his father, Bill Gates, Sr., recently came out in support of a Washington state measure to "create a 5 percent tax rate on annual income exceeding $200,000 for individuals and $400,000 for couples, and a 9 percent tax rate on income that tops $500,000 for individuals and $1 million for couples."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/1..._n_786516.html

Yes, go ahead and say that Buffet is a lapdog of Obama, but the man has only ever paid attention to one thing: his money. Even the help he offered during the financial crisis was to better himself. His public comments, if reported enough, could very well put the spotlight on the taxation of the rich, jeopardizing his own low tax rate, which is something he wouldn't do unless he truly believed both he and others are underpaying.

easy for them to say.

cykoe6 11-21-2010 03:34 PM

If they have too much money then they should give it to the government if they so desire. No one will try and stop them. :thumbsup

Kiopa_Matt 11-21-2010 03:34 PM

Can't wait for people to chime in with, "well, if Warren Buffet had a $3 billion tax break, there'd be more jobs in America, you know.".

lol

Altwebdesign 11-21-2010 05:19 PM

The UK is somehting like 40%!

Argos88 11-21-2010 05:30 PM

Yes, UK is damn expensive to live on, in all ways..

I really wonder who you Birtish guys do to live off adult right now... You must earn at least 10-15K per month if you want to have a "normal" living..

And I doubt much affiliates (not sponsor owners) earn that much right now. It was pretty common in 2005 tho.

It is the Huffington Post, the leftist version of fox news of the web, they are being intellectually dishonest.

They also don't tell you 40+% of Americans pay NO taxes and a large percent of the 40+% RECEIVE tax "refunds" that equal MORE than they paid. And part of that 40% are on welfare who have never paid a dime into the tax system and draining the system to the tune of $30,000+ a year.

craziness

fatfoo 11-22-2010 10:21 AM

You can read the book called the Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama. In that book, it says that several wealthy people approached Obama with ideas that rich people should pay more taxes than poor people. I suppose it makes sense.

actually they arent they slam the president on a regular basis. People clinging to their guns and religion .it was the huff post who broke that story. also welfare is about 1.7 percent of the population so it doesnt make a difference one way or another.

Tom_PM 11-22-2010 10:53 AM

The right needs to claim there are other "news" outlets as fake as Fox to re-level the playing field in their eyes.

It's been part of the right wing talking points for over a year now to vilify Huffington and MSNBC in particular.

The Demon 11-22-2010 11:06 AM

MSNBC and huffington post have as much credibility as fox news, that's the funny part.

tranza 11-22-2010 11:11 AM

I agree with them...

This is dead on. Not to mention what everyone so conveniently forgets is that a large portion of so called "wealthy Americans" are small business owners. On top of income tax, they have payroll taxes, sales taxes, etc they have to kick in with. Those in the top 1% of income pay over 90% of all income tax revenue. How much more are these people supposed to cough up? I'm guessing all of it, because it's not fair that they are rich while others are starving on the street....:1orglaugh

qwe 11-22-2010 11:15 AM

easy for them to say, it's a big difference taxing more billioneers or people who make 500k a year...

96ukssob 11-22-2010 11:17 AM

taxes should be based off of income and bills, not just straight how much you make.

for instance, if I made $100k a year ($8,333/mo), but had a $2500 mortgage payment, $1k car payments and $1500 in bills every month, that would put me at $5k/mo. After taxes, that leaves my $8,333 to $5,833 (assuming 30%), so I have $833 left over each month for savings, going out, luxuries, etc.

Now, if I made $100k a year but had no car payment, $600/mo bills (everyone has bills) and maybe a $1200/mo mortgage that leaves me with over $4,000/mo!

Sure, the first guy thats his own fault, but what if that guy has a family of 5 and his cost of living is higher because of where he lives due to his job. While guy 2 is single and works at home from his Internet company.

IMO, guy #2 should have to pay a little more tax that guy #1. For example, guy #1 pays 25% in tax while guy #2 pays 35% in tax which gives guy #1 an extra $416.75 in his pocket every month.

:2 cents:

I am not quite sure why everybody and their mother thinks that the UK is so expensive; the only thing expensive that I saw was rent/houses and everything else is more or less OK

Altwebdesign 11-22-2010 12:18 PM

if i was a billionaire, besides moving to a tax free country, i.e monaco id glady leave the UK paying 40% and move to the US to pay around 10% i wouldnt bat an eye lid!

Tom_PM 11-22-2010 12:24 PM

Everyone knows the rich pay more, and I'd be for a flat tax. But isn't it true that they pay less now than in the past? It's a question.
