How is the monthly membership business model doing?

Can we agree it's in sharp decline?

Phoenix 11-29-2010 12:35 PM

Do they pay $35 pps? :winkwink:

I'm referring to a different kind of business. You know.... pron?

pornguy 11-29-2010 12:50 PM

For some it is in a decline. They just wont admit it. Or they make it up with other sales. For others it is steady and growing slowly.

:)

The stats don't say that. Things have picked up. I think we have passed the bottom and things will continue to grow from here, that seems to be the trend this year.

I've seen it up to $21 per free trial.

Netflix is awesome! Loving it!!

Stephen 11-29-2010 01:15 PM

The grass is always greener...

I know you meant porn specific, but Apple, perhaps the most successful direct-download merchant (iTunes), feels it's leaving money on the table with its on-demand offerings and actively pursuing a monthly membership option for that service.

trevesty 11-29-2010 01:18 PM

I'd disagree with it being in a sharp decline.

Unless you're talking about old school people who still throw up quanity and don't focus on the quality.

then I'd agree.

Come on.... Netflix truly sucks until they can get the very latest releases when people want them.
From their "recently added" page (movies you'd think to be NEW):

What Happens in Vegas (2008)
Horton Hears a Who (2008)
The Happening (2008)
Office Space (1999)
WEEDS Season One (2005)

Hey Mark... can I come over? :1orglaugh

They "feel" they are?

I would have to vehemently disagree with Apple's feelings.

People want a choice. That's why there are as many different kinds of cookies as there are. Or 6 different brands of milk in the cooler at the supermarket.

Evil Chris 11-29-2010 07:25 PM

So... basically no problem with the monthly membership biz model!
All is well, and no problem!

:1orglaugh

Or more likely... nobody wants to touch this one.

I love Netflix and watch something streaming almost daily. So do millions of other people. What kind of fucking idiot claims that a widely popular service that gets rave reviews 'sucks'?

Overload 11-29-2010 07:29 PM

err, totally depends ... archive sites like videosz and movieprofits seem to have tanked big time whereas the new russian teen sites rock the boat ... no, no decline in monthly memberships on those kinda sites

:)

I've seen a number of "biggish" programs change their business model recently from "steady - yet honest - sales", to "milk the surfer for eveything we can".

I'm in the process of replacing them, and I've actually had some pretty good results.

Pfff. Please, no spoilers on Pretty Woman, I want to know what happens in the end. On Netflix tonight.

GrouchyAdmin 11-29-2010 08:01 PM

Netflix is almost as good as my DVR, but I'd have to walk out to get it, and it'd not be comped for the next few years.

:pimp

I dont think its the model.i think its the 5million cc accounts closed or reduced

icymelon 11-29-2010 08:03 PM

as far as rebills go this month is my best ever rebill ratio. I think you have to sell a quality product a lot of the sites we promote or that most of us are promoting really are not that great. Take a look at the members area and see for yourself.

I actually quite like those titles above!! $5-6 to rent EACH at blockbuster or $6 to watch them ALL on Netflix.

Bring popcorn mon ami!!!

I never said anything about spending with a credit card online. I'm sure that's doing all right.
I just wanted to get opinions on the model of a monthly membership for porn.

Well cc is the way to pay for things online and the monthly model is driven by cc's so you cant look at one and not the other

Agent 488 11-29-2010 08:54 PM

no rebill decline if no initial sign ups so hard to tell.

CPA37710T 11-29-2010 09:00 PM

maybe 5 million cards been cancelled, but think about how many are issued a day!... monthly memberships arent dying that easy, theres people who love porn and are faithful to their niches. Its all about content, and keeping the client happy. Monthly membership sites that die are those who never upgrade their content.

Agent 488 11-29-2010 09:02 PM

really hope no one thinks the same amount of credit cards are being issued than a couple years ago.

I think it depends on who you talk to. We're growing. I know of people(and hear of people) who are down sizing big time.. not to mention the ones who we all know are downsizing. It's all relative.

Some people are hit hard while others are fighting harder. :winkwink:
