Do you think my Host is overcharging me on bandwidth????

I got a bill from my host saying I was over on bandwidth, so I payed for extra BG. Then I started looking at my stats.

They showed me on their "master" account I had used 77 GB, but according to my monthly webalizer stats, I've only used about 43.7 GB. These images are big, but check this out http://www.freeeroticfantasy.com/freeeroticfantasy.jpg

I looked at my totals since I signed up, and heh, they add up to....77 GB!
    http://www.freeeroticfantasy.com/freeeroticfantasy2.jpg

Do you think they are billing me on my total for the past 3 months? Anyone know how accurate the Webalizer stats are?

I have just written the host, and I'm waiting for their response.

        LOL..

Those stats look alot like my host's stats. But it could be just the same software. Anyway, by the looks of things..they obviously made a calculation mistake..

Did they charge you for over usage "every" month? Or just this past?

        can ya email me?

This is their reply, what do you think of this?

            this are IP stats

            IP stats: https://www.westmaster.com/traffic/

Apache stats are refferer stats only: yourdomain.com/stats/ so they are not
accurate - they do not count all transfers and lose some info due to apache
            logs working.

We count all transfers on IP with IP stats and this stats are most accurate.
            This difference is normal.

Anyone else have that big of gap???

your pictures took for ever to load so I didn't look at them.

but if your looking at your webalizer stats. than that seems like a huge gap.

this month webalizer says ive used 471 gigs on one of my domains and my host has it at 478.57

on another domain webalizer has 111 and my host has 113.40

so not much of a difference.

unless they are billing you on the 95 percentile thing.

No, but I find it kinda "fishy" that the total amount they say I have this month, equals the total amount that I have to date on the Webalizer.

This amount difference is about 44%, seems awfully high.

See I could see it if it was more like your stats Muffy... you had a lot lower percentage difference.

We count all traffic on IP.
This mean outgoing and incoming. Apache web stats does not count all traffic on web there is difference 15-20% ask your host for exact traffic.
This customer has usage for this month: in 19Gb and out 62GB. Normal relation is about 1:10, so 4-6/62GB. This makes big differences to webalizer stats - Apache log does not count any in traffic and about 90% of outgoing.

As you have seen in my posts, I'm trying to figure out what is going on. I have written Wicked Content, a service I was using for displaying strip blackjack and poker on my site that might be "uploading" more traffic than usual.

I just don't understand it... Maybe I'm just really dense.

as we said in our emails it is not normal situation 1:3 relation in in/out traffic.
Customers has about 1-2:10 of traffic relations

Please check again which scripts could make this difference.

I don't know what you are talking about. Really, I know very little about what all this means. What is 1:2:10? Anyone else out there help me?

I currently have the following running:

                            1. a banner rotater script which is java based on several sites.

                            2. I tried to do a TGP, but not very sucessfully. I was using elitetgp program to run it, but only had about 50 sites sign up (40 of them mine) Only had (using the counter) about 700 hits to the page with the tgp on it.

                            3. Several strip black jack games/ poker games on one site that calls content from Wicked Content and shows shockwave games. Bear in mind, since this site opened I haven't had killer traffic. I have contacted Wicked to see if this is the problem.

If I am being hotlinked, I can't find it no weird URLs, and I have .htaccess in the root directories.

All of my domain files are slightly less than 100MB total

                                What is 1:2:10
What westmaster is trying to say is that between 1:10 and 2:10 the normal ratio of up:down.

So you're up should be between 10 and 20 percent of your down. Any more/less is abnormal.

                                E.g, if down was 30gigs

At the LEAST, 10% of that would be up. That would be (30*0.1)=3 up, 30 down, a total of 33.

At the MOST, 20% of that would be up. That would be (30*0.2)=6 up, 30 down, a total of 36.

It is not impossible for it to be less than 10% or more than 20%, but it is unusual. What they are trying to say is that your up:down ratio is unusually high at around 4:10 (or roughly 1:3 cancelled down)

                                I think...

                                  of course not

10-20% this is average usage from our customers

It should not be more than 20% but it could be. We do not do investigation of it, we meter traffic on our routers on your own unique IP and there are no mistakes.

But if you use anything different as classic web content which requires more in traffic we do not care of it of course but you have to pay this traffic.

                                        problem with loading

if you see customer main page loads fast, problem is that there are no files under this domain and 404 error try to redirect.

I think I can clear up your confusion with your old host. What they are doing is billing you for each and every byte that you use up with your account. By metering the IP at the router level they get all traffic which includes mail, ftp, and web. Now normally incoming web traffic is around 10% to 20% of what your outbound traffic is. So if you are using 30GB of traffic according to your apache stats, then you could be using 3 to 6 GB for the incoming request on that page that was sent out. Then there is the incoming and outgoing ftp traffic that you use up when you make changes to the site, and finally if your mail is on the same server, they are also getting you for it. The other factor that may account for some of the offset is the fact that all internet traffic is IP based which has an overhead of it's own, that if they were counting at the router level, it may add another 5% to 15% depending on the packet size that was being sent out. I'm sorry if this is too technical To give you a real world example. I looked at the stats for my site from the apache logs, using wusage. It told me that I used 11.24GB. When I look at my bandmin stats which take the ip traffic reading every 5 minutes from my switch, it shows a whole different story, over 21GB. I of course send and receive a lot more mail than the normal user, and I also do lots of daily updates, and putting up sample pages for customers. But it is very likely that you may have been in the same boat. If you do lot's of updates, or if you download your raw log files each day, or get or send lot's of mail. So hopefully that was not too confusing. I guess the moral of the story is, the cheapest host is not always the cheapest Thanks.

It's good to hear that you are switching hosts. If your host can't even explain your situation in a manner in which you can understand, even while coming to a public board, he's assed out.

Tim at least explained to you what up/down meant. Maybe you should try his hosting. You should always email them a couple of times with some questions to see check their customer service level.

I hope your new host works out.
