The Back Story to Why I Started Hosting:
Getting into hosting was not really something I was looking to do as a full time business mode, just as consulting gigs was not something I had planned for. However, over the years people would read my tutorials, and post from various forums and then offer to pay me to help them. Sometimes it was something minor like help with a clip store, cutting/watermarking/processing clips. Other times it was building a whole site for them, or wanting to license content, mentoring so on. I basically followed the money. The more of these jobs I took, the more I would find looking for the same. So I proactively started offering to help people in this arena. Over the past couple of years, it turned into a decent chunk of my time. While I still shoot my own content, have my own pay sites, clip stores and what not. I also do enjoy helping people. Of course, money in that equations nice as well. Plus it gives me a chance to work on the development end. Clients can submit ideas for scripts, tools, sites and between them/myself/programmers we can develop these things. They get scripts they can use, cheaper then they could get doing them their self, and we get another feather in the cap to offer. So how does this all get to hosting? Well, when we would build these different sites we would run into issues with different hosts. Typically after a deal would close, I'd tell the client some tips on domain name picking, and then tell them to get a host with these specs and then get back to me. I would give some recommendations on who I thought was good, but ultimately it's the client's choice and money. While not ALL hosts fall into this category, nor am I going to go through name calling who are some of the worst, we run into a number of issues. Konrad would like 'root access' to get things done faster. The vast majority of hosts will not provide this. Causing us unnecessary delays. Back and forth nonsense sometimes for days. Some boxes would not be set up correctly, so that would cause us grief. Some clients would go and get these unmanaged boxes where we would have to fight with them to get support done on the installation and tweaks. Others provide the wrong configuration so that forces people into $300.00+ dedicated boxes they did not need to get the RAM and disk space required for some of these sites. When things would become frustrating or we would run into issues with some host. It actually would make konrad/me/whomever looks bad. Even when it's not our fault. So after some discussion with the guys, I opted to start a hosting company. This way we could order the boxes we wanted, with the specs we needed, and configure them in a way to make them realistic and affordable to clients (more RAM more disk space). Better yet, set to run the tube and other CMS's we routinely deal with perfectly. We can look to add in other software to the boxes and optimize them for the scripts and content we deal with. This would give us a STANDARD of expectations and service that WE could directly control. We would no longer be a slave to the others and their limits. We would have a smaller client base, and provide superior service since we are not just some hosting company. We own everything, so we know there will not be break downs in communications, or other b.s. we ran into before. The programmers can tell me what we need, and how we should do things, and we set the boxes up how the clients need them for the offerings provided. We can also very easily start integrating the content library side to provide easy plug in options for those running sites, tubes, on the web hosting side. Speeding things up along the way. Instead of having to download everything, it would be like a plug and play. These types of advantages would be helpful to those clients I do consulting for. Whew. Now, all of that said, is my hosting company right for everyone? Nope. If you care about some of these secondary "buzz words" like reseller, and owning this and that, it's fine. If you really think it means something in the era of service agreements (where servers can be easily swapped out, ticket response times, standard of service guarantees) that's your prerogative. You do not HAVE to host with me. You can buy script/content/etc. and go host where ever. You may pay more, but that's your choice. As for the 10% nonsense. Any host can be set up any number of ways. From owning the equipment and switches, to owning nothing. As for bandwidth, almost everyone in the hosting game is a reseller for the pipe on the back end. Most appear to fall in the middle. Some own their boxes, and are a one man show. So support will suffer. For me, that was not an option. I wanted fast response times and servers we could set up that was best for the offers. I offer a service with good prices, with quality boxes set up to provide a quality of service that works best for our consulting clients, and those who need more personalized attention. We can give them fast response times for support on the scripts/sites/installations and faster content integrations versus downloading. Plus I have 24/7/365 tech support (L1-L3) that can handle any issue, and provide pre-sales support as well as live chat if you need it. While not good for everyone, it is an excellent option for those who we work with. ![]() |
