it all depends on the look your going for 3 is better than 2 yes!
soft boxes are good also. I use 4 1000 watt soft boxs mounted on the sets like here
and the 3 strobes are photoflex 1000 watt but alien bees are really good as well and a lot cheaper. But my upstairs sets I use daylight keno flows
