Received similar emails, will answer them here:

Current offer is $6K. I'm holding out for a better offer because I have not had a chance to aggressively promote the sale yet. Looking for more $ or attractive "$ + %" deal. If we don't sell it, we'll develop it over the summer. If you're interested in making an offer or partnering with us, let me know.

I'm beginning to think that perceived domain value is hugely dependent on the domain history/rep of the holder. No disrespect meant, just an observation from a little guy.

And before you start flaming me...

              housewifesearch.com - $8.88
              oralsearch.com - $8.88
              upskirtsearch.com - $8.88
              spycamsearch.com - $8.88

If I believed in the value of this particular theme I'd be gone for an hour and come back with something much better. I'm just making a point.

some of the domains you listed above are great, and probably won't last long...

but perhaps the value is based on what the buyers/bidders are planning on doing with the site... eye of the beholder. type-ins are important to some, brand-ability is important to others who plan on development. not sure what everyone's plans are, but everyone has their own reasons... I suspect a few bidders are launching or currently own Pornstar Search engines/tgps and want to own this name to re-brand or take off the market.

                eye of the beholder:
i.e. MELON.com - To many on GFY, it was a weird/ridiculous domain and a few laughed at me for owning/buying it for the price I paid because it had no ppc value, etc. In fact, when it dropped at POOL, I only fought with two other domainers and the price shot up past 25K even though OVT showed nothing at the time and PPC was dry... but when i sold it, the buyer did not give a damn about who i was, type-ins or blah blah blah... they wanted to build a brand name around MELON... it could have been anything else like BANANA or PEACH, but fortunately for me... they wanted to call their service Melon and I had the .com and they paid me 6 figures for it.

i.e. mPorn.com - I sold the domain recently after listing it on GFY... got some interest from serious bidders but every values differently... but the buyer was a non-GFYer that valued it highly. The buyer has a masterplan (I've seen part of it) and I don't think who I was, PPC, type-ins, etc were a big factor... just making sure they had a lock on the marketplace, own a great brand name, etc... I know they will be big players in the mobile space (mainstream & adult) after seeing the network they are launching... quite amazing.

                etc...

It must be nice to actually see something get developed. MelOn looks good but they could have saved teh cash and gone mel0n. with a zero from the look of it.

I said it earlier today and I guess I have to stand by it. I am not capable at all in this game.

maybe the guy that owns it was asking too much.

possibly, or maybe you just haven't anaylzed it from all the angles...

(I posted this in another thread...)

It's not about LUCK. It's about WORK. keep your eyes & ears tuned to current events/trends/news, etc... Timing is very important too.

You don't need 7-figs to play this game. Just start small. Go after cheap type-in domains to resell to DB and others or go after new registrations or brandable domains and work to find buyers.

I picked up a domain earlier this year that I've been after for nearly two years... I had to track down the owner because whois was a bit outdated and when I finally did track him down, he turned down my first offer and wanted 5-figs... I don't blame him for trying to play hardball. Keep in mind, the domain had no type-in traffic and I wanted it strictly for branding. I had a feeling the concept would be tech-feasible & acceptable sooner or later. Well this year, I tried to buy the name again and the owner was in dire need of cash and was willing to get rid of the domain and sold it to me for less than $1,000. After I secured the domain, I started contacting all the players in that industry (service side & technology side) and am shopping around a proposal now to get cash + tiny % (if they choose to develop it). The current offers are low 5 figures (w/o %) and I'm going to try to push it into the 6's (w/ %) by letting the companies bid against each other. It was a domain/concept that wasn't even on anyone's radar years ago, never got type-ins, and the term wasn't even being used until this year... but I took a gamble (low risk) and it's paying off. There are many ways to play the domain game and many different pricepoints to enter the marketplace:

                        - new registrations (new trends, ideas, terms, industries, etc)
                        - brand-ables (many domain players steer clear of this sector. Fine by me.)
                        - type-ins (keeping or reselling to larger fish)
                        etc...

                        ...

it's like every business: some succeed, where others fail. It takes a lot of trial and error... some people follow in the footsteps of those who've succeeded and try to learn by example, while others are trailblazers.

With new registrations as low as they are ($7-$10), you've got minimal risk to play this game... just don't get in over your head by registering hundreds of bad domains. Try to filter out which domains are bad (crap) takes skill... it's also an art form... but sometimes you've got to go with your gut.

But when it comes to the domain industry, one thing's for sure, as a player or spectator it is one of the most exciting games out there.

                                tough calls.

price to keep them is $6-10 so it's a low-risk gamble to hold it. you might as well try selling it here for $XX-$XXX... or Afternic for $XXX before you let it go. keep in mind, the mobile porn market will be ready in 2008 w/ multi-billions spent (est. $5-10 B) and your domains may be worth much more so keep it in your portfolio for now.

                                i.e.

I reg'd a lot of Blog domains back in 2001 (SexBlog.com, NewsBlog.com, TVBlog.com, etc all on the same day) but at one point in time I had to decide whether or not to keep them because you can't keep everything when it comes to brandable/concept domains. I almost let some of my blog domains expire because the blog industry never caught up to my expectations... it wasn't a billion dollar industry, in fact, at that time, it wasn't even a million dollar industry, it didn't even qualify as an industry, LOL. If you're watching the Blog "Industry" now, and look at all the players (Goog, MS, Y, AOL, Lycos, Cuban, AMAZ, etc) and dollars being spent, you'll see it was more than worth it for me to keep those blog domains... a low risk gamble that paid off. Back in 2001, people were blogging but no one cared too much for blog domains and only a few people bought a large group of them. In fact, I reg'd SexBlog.com 09/2001 and PornBlog.com was still available until 05/2002... ... but now (4 years later) blog domains are on fire, look at the most recent sale of MobileBlog.com for $10K+, then VideoBlog.com for $20K+, etc... in fact, we recently acquired one of the other large portfolio holders (200+ blog domains) for 6-figures... and just in time... because AOL may be interested in one of the domains.

so perhaps the mobile/cellular porn domains will be worth something in a few years. Some people don't mind waiting, some do. Maybe if you let them expire now, they'll be available for you to re-reg in the future. IMHO, I would hold on to domains like this for a little while longer... but that's for you to decide. I only sold mPorn.com because I was getting countless offers from companies trying to get a foothold in the mobile porn industry before their competitors. I sold to developers, not ppc specialists, etc. so if you hold onto the mobile porn names for a few more years you may reap some rewards or none... up to you how you want to play the game.

                                good luck.

                                                      Nice to see you back!

Off topic, but a bump for a good name anyway.

How much value do/would you put on domain appraisals, more specifically, Afternic appraisals?

hmmm... it depends if your buyers care about appraisals. I for one, as of now, have never factored in, required or asked for appraisals. to each his own...
