Yeah, what that DOESN'T tell you though is that massive overfishing by the US and spain just outside (and sometimes inside) canadian territorial waters has depleted cod stocks so much that the seals have to be trimmed down just to keep the fish population from being totally destroyed.

Don't want seals wiped out? Shoulda thought of that years ago before pulling in 5x legal catch limits and not giving a fuck about what tomorrow would bring. Maybe the boycott should be on the over-fishing assholes what caused the problem to begin with.

Simply not true. I'm not sure where your getting your information from, but thats got to be a slanted statement.. More seals die then cows ? I think what that statement reflects is the most mammals killed " at one time" . But that really doesn't mean much if we kill 1/3 the amount of cows each and every day..

heres a breakdown on the seals..

150 years ago there was 9 million seals..

We hunted them at various times and brought that number down to about 3 million.

Now in the less than the last 1/3 of that time period , seal population has DOUBLED to about 6 million.

So the populaion is rebounding faster than we depleted it.. That means because of the no competition , seals are eating fish that we eat , and depleting them . But those fish ( because we fish them ) wont rebound like the seals do , because the combined depletion is too much..

We need to control the seal population to keep fish around.. ( or stop fishing ;) )

It's a difficult issue, what irks most people is the clubbing, but its the most effecient way to do it, ( besides guns with silencers , and the govt wont allow them to use them )

I'm not saying your wrong to defend them , i'm just saying theres so many issues even i dont have enough info to know what to argue for or against.

A marine biologist would be the best person to tell us the "real" answers.

Not forever just for say 2 years then 1 year on then 2 years off , to help the fish come back. A unilateral ban on all commercial fishing for all of north america..

A pound of commercial fish is worth jack squat to the government anyways, a pound of sport fish is worth tons of money to tourism. literally hundreds of dollars..

I could go on a 2 year no-fish diet , knowing i will be able to fish with my kids and actually catch lots of fish.

no offense, but things like this play out, it is called nature...and whether it has to do with humans or nature, things become extinct, and sometimes there are reasons

just let nature and fate play it's course...i guarantee in 10-20 years we will see a new breed of seal or something show up that is just as cute and we can print out pictures of to put in our 2020 calendars
