Whats More Popular? Harry Potter Or Star Wars?

Domestically, that means North America, I think Star Wars wins hands down. However, world-wide? Harry Potter wins over Star Wars, and wins big. The numbers bear me out. First off, the HP books have sold over 300 million worldwide.........Star Wars novels don't even register a blip and aren't even worth mentioning, sales-wise.

    Now, the movies........

Star Wars again wins domestically, but loses worldwide. I took the Top 3 Star Wars movies of all time, worldwide box office, and they are "Phantom Menace", "Revenge of the Sith", and "A New Hope." "A New Hope" also includes the re-release of Star Wars with the digital effects in it, in which ppl. flocked to see because back then, digital effects and CGI were in vogue and new. Now, its routine. However, they add up to $2.548 Billion. Those are the top 3 of the 6 Star Wars movies. And one cannot argue that the numbers are skewed due to inflation. I counter that simply by saying back in the late 70's and 80's, so few movies were released by studios due to the infancy of the home video movement, that the competition for the movie dollar was a joke compared to now. Movie numbers now, despite inflation, are more impressive due to the rabid competition and sheer numbers of titles to contend with. Thats why what Titanic achieved was so incredible.

So we have the Top 3 Star Wars movies at: $2.548 Billion worldwide.

The first 3 Harry Potter movies are at: $2.643 Billion worldwide. And trust me, this last one, Goblet of Fire, may be even higher grossing than the first three, or will at least place second of the 4 made. That, along with record book sales, leads me to conclude Harry Potter is more popular than Star Wars has ever been on a world-wide scale. But in N. America I still think Star Wars is more popular.

      I can't stand either.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

I like Star Wars. I don't think its brilliant by any means. I mean, really, look at some of those scripts and the dialogue. Lucas can create wonderful worlds and creatures but seems to lose it when it comes to actual story-telling. But yeah, I like Star Wars, but world-wide, the numbers simply bear out. "Harry Potter" is more popular world-wide than Star Wars.

You are forgetting merchandising, in which case Star Wars was really the pioneer. Between toys and video games I'm sure Star Wars does a lot bigger numbers.

You'd think with all George Lucas' money, he could have hired someone to write some decent dialogue for the last three films, instead of the rubbish he crapped out.

Revenge of the Sith wasn't that bad, although I have to admit, those first two movies, Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, the scripts were atrocities. In my mind, they diminished the whole Star Wars series. Lucas did a better job writing THX-1138 and American Graffitti, imo. I don't know. I think Lucas either was going for the 'too commercial' appeal or his writing skills had eroded pathetically over time, seeing as how he hadn't done another movie for such a long time.

But, back to the subject at hand, based on 300 million+ books being sold of HP & the box office returns, HP is more popular worldwide than Star Wars.

The thing about the books with Star wars, is they the Movies were done first. Most of the books dont have much to do with the movies.

But for Harry Potter, the books came first.

Star Wars is was and always will be more popular than Harry Potter. It's pointless to compare today to the 70s, but Star Wars started a whole new revolution while Harry Potter is for stupid little kids who didn't understand Lord of the Rings...Star Wars wins flat out..

I think it's only a fair comparison if we wait 20 years to see if anyone remember Harry Potter like we remember Star Wars..

Harry Potter eclipses Sith and its not even done yet

                                    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/...yr=2005&p=.htm

Point proved. Worldwide, Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire has surpassed Revenge of the Sith already, and its not even done its run yet.........HP surely will go over $900 Million yet again. This is noteworthy because this was the last Star Wars movie & obviously the most in demand SW movie, and it isn't even the last HP movie, yet HP outgrosses Star Wars. So the numbers bear out my hypothesis; Star Wars is far more popular domestically, that is, in North America, but not worldwide as Harry Potter is proving more popular than Star Wars. The people have voted at the box office.

Old starwars hands down, I don't care for the new ones. Harry Potter movies are far more entertaining than any of the new starwars.
