WikiPedia + Porn = PornoPedia? anyone? (bomis?)

Anyone run a porn encyclopedia type resource? I'm getting a few offers for my domain, PornoPedia.com, but I've always wanted to throw some wiki software at it and see what happens. if anyone's interested in collaborating, let me know... anything's possible. In fact, few people know that even Wikipedia has (some) roots in the porn industry. The guy who started Bomis (Jimmy Wales) launched & still runs Wikipedia:

In 1994, Wales went on to became the Research Director at Chicago Options Associates a futures and options trader in Chicago which he did for six years.[4][7] In 1996, he founded a search portal called Bomis, which also sold adult content until mid-2005. He was asked in a September 2005 C-SPAN interview about his previous involvement with what the interviewer, Brian Lamb, called "dirty pictures". In response, Wales described Bomis as a "guy-oriented search engine", with a market similar to Maxim magazine.[4] In an interview with Wired News, he also explained that he disputed the categorization of Bomis content as "soft-core pornography": "If R-rated movies are porn, it was porn. In other words, no, it was not."[8] He is no longer actively involved in the company.

In March 2000, he started a peer-reviewed, open-content encyclopedia, Nupedia.com ("the free encyclopedia"), and hired Larry Sanger to be its editor-in-chief.[4] While Wales was CEO, Bomis donated over US$100,000 (primarily through salaries and providing free Internet access) to Nupedia and Wikipedia, and continued supporting them into 2002.

the idea of an open source, collaborative encyclopedia, open to contribution by ordinary people, ... and the funding was entirely by Bomis.

I still think a site like Pornopedia.com could pull in serious traffic. maybe even a good name for a porn review site, but that's not the target I'm aiming for...

not true. wikipedia is loosely, but directly, connected to Wikia.com a for-profit, venture backed ($4,000,000) business using the same mediawiki engine that powers Wikipedia. In fact, Wales runs both.

there a lots, LOTS of Wikis online that are for-profit.

that's what I'm hoping for. workload can be distributed among all the users. of course, have to provide some incentive to users (content contributors): traffic-share, rev-share, perks, etc.

I'll throw it up there and if it doesn't work, I'll let users keep tweaking it until it does.

Actually Taboo, we have had this idea for some time. We already have much of the development and a portion of the design out of the way but decided to put the project on the back burner for a while in order to concentrate on a few other projects. Jimmy Wales, yea i remember that guy, was nice, he used to email me and i'd email him about certain questions, issues etc etc about bomis.com, and he sent me at least 5+ bomis tshirts ;)
