Taking care of business on a Mac

Sometime ago, after another Windows XP crash, I decided to make the conversion over to a Mac. I still have a Win XP laptop but most of my work is done on an Imac and Macbook.

Anybody else using primarily Macs? Can you share some of the Mac software you feel is essential to your business? Im looking for stuff that isn't necessarily part of the Adobe/Microsoft/Macromedia trio but that stuff counts too.

I am completly MAC based. Dealing with photo and videos all day I couldnt think of a better platform. I do most of my work with Adobe/Macromedia software. For email and office work I use MS office, for my books I use Quicken. Can't beat iCal for organizing the week, and of course you have iTunes, and the whole Final Cut suite.

Leopard looks to be an amazing upgrade to the OS cant wait for that!

what do you need to do?

If you need better chat capabilities than iChat provides, go download Adium.
          http://www.adiumx.com/

Make Safari better by having it not autoload every flash animation and being able to do some advanced filtering of sites: http://hetima.com/safari/stand-e.html

Get QuikSilver for application launching from your keyboard... I personally set it to use apple-shift-up as my key combo.. it's very useful:
          http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/

And if you absolutely must have pc apps or have access to a pc, go download parallels, it's pretty amazing:
          http://www.parallels.com

Other than those and the macromedia apps you named I can't think of anything else.

If for no other reason than to see the videos people link to on GFY and Yahoo Fantasy Football, I've setup Parallels and Win 2k.

Some good info so far - keep it coming.

What type of videos can't you view in OS X?

Flip4Mac will allow you to view WMV movies in quicktime, DivX will let you play Xvid and DivX movies in Quicktime. And VLC Player will play pretty much ANYTHING.

Keep in mind on a Mac you can do more with less.

Only use Macs except for TGP submit and to update the Windows' anti-virus software occasionally. When we get the new Intel Macs by the end of the year our "trusty" Windows machines are going to get a nice sea-burial in our pond.

Have both, Adobe and Macromedia, since they merged they are probably soon going to combine the two somehow, which might get rid of sucky Fireworks in favor of Photoshop. Other than that you can use Final Cut Express or Pro and dump both, Avid and Premiere, which is going to speed up video editing 500%.

MassReplaceIt is a great freeware find and replace tool. Other apps I use daily, Adium, Opera, QuickSilver, Mail, SKedit, Transmit(although mac FTPs in general suck IMO), camino, VLC, Chicking of the VNC, PathFinder

My company develops adult software specifcally for OS X. I have 2 apps in development at the moment and can't wait to hand out the betas.

                                                We use Xcode.

I use Transmit for FTP, but I think it's poor compared to the many fully featured Windows FTP apps. I tried lots of FTP apps, not happy really with any of them. Perhaps one day I'll design my own.

i use all macs for work and i use Final Cut Pro/iMovie for video editing, (VideoJockey for live editing) AdobePS suite for photos and everything else. if you do any music production, i also use/recommend Reason/Propellerhead s/w.

I'm really thinking about getting a Mac. A buddy of mine just got a job at the store in Boulder and can get me a discount. Think I just might have to use it after hearing everyones reviews. I have a Toshiba Sattellite now and I love it, but I think I am convinced on switching over.
