As far as I know, you still have to crop one thumb from each gallery first.

Nope, just set ST to autocrop x amount of thumbs per gallery and they will get casted on the index, after that it will keep the best thumb and remove the bad ones..
We at Smartthumbs like democracy so we let traffic decide which is the better thumb :-)

Offcoz you can also crop em manualy..
