I've been running my blog for a few years now, just as a hobby really, and I have never got any sort of decent traffic. As it's more of a hobby than anything I don't mind this two much but I'd like to make sure I'm at least doing the right things when I do post. So, here's some details about my site - should/could it be doing better?

Site: Apparently I can't post URLs yet, but if you need any more details about the site, just ask.
No. of posts: about 500 (I had around 2,000 but a lot of these were low quality so I removed them for now)
Average post length: 300 words (and with 1-6 images)
Post frequency: 2 per week
Backlinks: I don't really have any so <5 (I'm guessing this is a big problem)
Promotion: Have around 2,000 twitter followers and I share links there

No. of unique hits: 50-100 per day

So, what do you think? Could I be doing better and is there anything I obviously need to get onto? I'd appreciate any advice - I'm not looking to be a major money-spinner or anything (I guess tube sites are the way to go), I'm quite happy with my little site but I'm wondering if I could improve its discoverability without a massive overhaul.

Get some backlinks

Yes it should be doing way better if it's unique content.

500 posts with 300+ words should definetely bring WAY more than 50-100 UV/day. This is quite a bunch load of posts and you should do something with it. Search for niche related hardlinks only from quality sites (link should be in block of text.. no footer or sitewide (although they don't hurt in low numbers), no inside block of links in sidebar etc.)! No "get hardlinks from 50 domains for $50 for 50 years". Take care of your anchor distribution and spread new backlinks over time. You should see improvement with such content. And don't forget publishing new posts on regular basis. You are on the right track here.
