I am a new designer pursuing my masters in graphic design. I have excellent skills in photoshop, illustrator, design skills, and web design skills,

My question is: how does a designer get started and what type of work is needed around here?

You can build mockup designs to show webmasters what exactly you are capable of. Some designers say they're good in photoshop, but very few can actually design like a pro. Show your portfolio and there are a lot of great webmasters that'll hire great talents here.
