The temperature of the cigarette, even at the side of the lit portion, is more than enough to cause gasoline to autoignite. However, there are many other factors that one should take into account. It matters how the cigarette actually falls onto the surface to the gasoline. There is a lower chance of autoignition if the cigarette falls on it's side where the temperature is lower. Also, the temperature of the gasoline itself matters. If the gasoline is cold to start with then there is again a lower chance of autoignition. One should also consider the amount of the gasoline that you have, namely if you have a large volume of gasoline that would mean that the there is enough surrounding liquid for the heat to go into and therefore the temperature of the gasoline-cigar contact spot would due to heat conduction of the gasoline decrease rapidly, therefore reducing the chance for autoignition.

Diesel fuel will ignite at temperatures as low as 260F ... thus why a diesel engine has glow plugs ... but a gasoline engine requires temperatures of 480 - 700F to ignite, which is achieved through a 30,000 volt spark - delivered by a copper or platinum tipped spark plug.

It also doesn't make sense to blame the 2 women who were in the bed of the
truck without the gas or the cigarette.

We have two options for getting gas here in Thailand...

1) At a gas station. However, these are sometimes out of the way and they often close early.

2) A random pit stop where someone, usually motorbike taxi drivers, will store gas inside of whiskey bottles. Some will flip the bottle up and pour it right into your tank, and others will use a funnel. It is not uncommon for them to be SMOKING while they do it, ashes falling right into the funnel. When they do this, I walk across the street and wait until they are finished, camera in hand waiting for them to catch fire. Sadly, it's never happened. Darwin is patient in the land of monkeys.

I think the premise of the movie is spot on and I've tried to watch it several times. Unfortunately I've known or met WAY too many real living, breathing examples of the characters portrayed in movie. I really do find it too painful to deal with -- or even watch -- people this stupid. It seems their numbers seems to be increasing every year.

Real life versions of the characters in this movie appear everyday in news stories like that of the OP's as well as reality shows such as Cops, Jersey Shore, any of the "Real Housewives of...", etc.
