This was one of my dream case, but slowly realized its just a money pit. Unless you are going to buy a brand new one, I would highly suggest staying away from any used model 2008 and below (even if you get CPO).

From what I heard, the 760's are a nightmare. Have a lot of transmission and engine problems and will easily set you back thousands at the dealer. Remember, this car is a frequent member to the dealership and they LOVE to rape you because no one else can maintenance them.

Rather, I'd suggest looking into the Lexus LS460 L. They have a long wheel base and the inside and ride is more comfortable then the 750 IMO. If your buying a car because you want something nice to drive around, I would say Lexus for the long wheel base, otherwise you will pay more than you should for the S550 from mbenz.

The best car I ever had was a 2006 Infiniti M45. That car was awesome and I miss it. Doesnt have a LWB but is easily comparable to a 5 series

pretty good thoughts, i really like the lexus as well and less problematic for sure...caddy as a new sedan comming out this year I beleive... the xts

qwe 01-05-2011 11:08 AM

look into a brand new 5 series, interior is identical to 7 and alot less stuff to go wrong...

fuzebox 01-05-2011 12:16 PM

I'm surprised you'd pick the 750/760 over the M5... To me a 5 series is as big as I'd ever want in a car (hell the current 3 series seem as big as the 5 series from 10 years ago).

Yeah, I've had some offers on that ... I buy a lot of cars from the Manheim lanes. The dealer has already offered me more than they are fetching at Manheim right now. Local dealer says he can only get $52,000 for the car retail, and that's pushing it. Gotta love depreciation. I'll probably sell it for a bundle less and give someone a deal.

I wouldn't consider the Toyota at all ... just don't feel that it's in the same class overall. And 0-60 performance isn't an issue .. the Viper already does sub-4, so it's not like I'll be blown away by 5.4, hehe. I really don't intend to press the BMW gas down much at all.

Not really willing to consider the Toyota or the Nissan at this point, but if they become options I'll look into those models. I agree with you about the money-pit situation, even with CPO's. I'm going in eyes-open on that one.

You're right about the size of the current 3 series. As far as the M5 goes, I just am not looking for the 5-series at this time. I'm sure it's an incredible car (Mark from GTS can attest to that), but I am not looking for another "plaything" -- got enough of those. Now I want a big boat that I can stuff girls into and bring 'em to the city or back to the lake. "Playtime" will be when I take the other cars out of the garage, hehe.

Isn't the M5 a lot smaller, though?

Young 01-05-2011 03:37 PM

The thing about buying big body luxury cars is that the redesign/refreshed bodies depreciate as much as 60% after the 3rd year. That's when all of the 36 month leases are returned to the dealer. And since people who can afford a $110k usually lease and don't buy used.

Major depreciation happens.

You can pick up a 2007 S550 with the newer body (2010 saw a minor grille/body kit refresh) for $28k right now. Maybe less if you have access to the auctions.

A year from now you'll be able to pick up a new body 750 for $35.

TL;DR - Buy used.

That's funny I've heard the exact opposite about the brand new 7 series. The 06 model (2003-2008) had major issues. The few people I talked to who owned both the older and new model say that all of those issues have been fixed.

The LS model you're referring to with the big steering wheel ended production in 2006. 2007 is the new model year. I agree that the LS460 is comfortable and you can find the new gen in the 30's right fully certified through Lexus. But the car is boring and nowhere in the same league as the interior of the new BMW.

I will straight trade you one of my donkeys for the viper. You're actually winning on this deal because the donkey can serve two purposes - transport and sex, where as the Viper just drinks gas.

mineistaken 01-05-2011 04:41 PM

what, don't sell it to dealers they will pay you less, why not post and ad somewhere where people use to sell cars (classifieds) and sell to some person. You can definitely get more than what a dealer would give. And if you don't want to be bothered just ask some not so rich buddy or family to help sell it for you and split the extra few thousands you would get more (on top of what dealer would give you)

I am a convertible guy. I leased the 650 BMW and not a day goes by that I don't regret it and wish I still had my Audi S4 or the new S5.

baycouples 01-05-2011 05:27 PM

I have owned the 750 before and it was a complete piece of shit. I got it brand new. The BMW service is horrible ( because it's free ) and complaining to the BMW of North America doesn't do shit. It broke down 7 days in the first 3 years. They put wrong breaks on it ( from the 3-series ). Their electronics inside the car is probably the worst on the market.

I would recommend the Lexus LS460L which is probably the best car on the market right now.

here i can go unlimited on 60% of the highways and most of you would pee your pants above 120 mp/h. i do that with one hand while having breakfast. i start using the second hand at 130 mp/h

Platinumpimp 01-05-2011 06:00 PM

Are you looking for the F01 7 series, or the E65/E66?

The new 760i F01 is a true beast, twinturbo V12 with 544bhp. Same acceleration figures as the E60 M5, which is quite impressive for such a big and heavy car.

OK, here's my two cents. BMW's drive GREAT to drive, no doubt about it, I love to drive them, however the build quality is ridiculous, you must live near a dealership to own one, they should give an extra years warranty to replace the year you lose while they are in the shop.

I've had a Z3. 2.8 (some time ago of course).. bought my daughter an X5 4.4, also had an M3, and bought my son a 330 sport. All these cars were brand new or had a handful of miles when I bought them (under 5,000), ALL of them gave us tons of trouble. BMW never like to admit to a problem, my M3 had the bearing replaced twice (second time dealer error) to stop the piston coming out the side of the engine, the 330 had a rattle in the engine since new they could not fix it, new motor, still same, now no warranty and they turned their back, the list of repairs and time I spent there is too big for the GFY database so I won't tap it out. Oh my brother bought the 335i, same problems, just tons of stupid small issues... Hey when you buy one, I'll be able to say I told you so!

Check out our 330i engine that they refused to do anything with now:
www dot youtube.com/watch?v=b4xmaeGl4nk

No more BMW's, our Merc has been FAR more reliable, we've had a few problems, but I'd consider another one for sure, try driving an AMG, amazing, sleepers but my god are they powerful, they eat up highway miles for fun but give amazing performance.

Had the Porsche, felt the pain, never again, another car that got me on speed dial to the dealer

Italian..umm.. never again, got a Maserati, holly crap talk about unreliable and expensive to maintain, not much comes close. The dealer cracked my windshield the other day after they tried to fix my mirror back on for the third time, $2,000! And they wanted me to claim on my insurance yeah right, they got all pissy and now I'm not so welcome there.. lovely.

I am actually thinking my next car would be a Nissan GT-R, not much room in the back, but everything else is just what I'm looking for. As a speed guy you might want to look at this, hey that Viper clutch must have worn out your knee by now? The GT-R has the paddle shifters, I have the F1 on my Maserati and it rocks, especially in a race.. apparently LOL, takes a few months to get used to but would not have anything else, the GT-R also has the double clutch. I did take it in a legal road rally, racing against the new RS8 audi...slow.. only the V10 is fast.. and a GTR-3.. umm no problem keeping up..strange...I thought they were quicker.

Somebody mentioned Audi..great cars, never owned one, but believed to be well built.. my friend has the V10 one with the Lambo engine, think it's an S?, powerful, but heavy, I smoked him in the Maserati :) . oh he says it drinks gas like no other car he ever owned.

Or, just save the money and get an Evo with paddle shifters and double clutch, a bit boy racer but I've driven them in a rally driving course, holly crap, talk about amazing handling and performance, truly an amazing car, and you won't take a bath financially like a BMW when you come to sell it.

I could always sell you my Prowler? Yellow, 3,000 miles.. not much of a day to day car though, but great looks!

OK, back into my cage I could yap about cars all day and night... looks like I just did :)

I think you are going to hear a lot of "I told you so..." with the 7 series. I honestly have not met a 7 series owner that did not bitch about the maintenance. You said you didn't have maintenance issues with the Viper. Well, with the 7 series, you are going to get a lot of heartburn.

Seems like you wants looks, prestige and practicality. I would highly suggest a brand new E63 AMG, or a used one. A brand new one will cost you $100K, but you can get a used one from $50K-$80K.

I bought my 2008 E63 AMG brand new, and it is a fucking beast, with no maintenance issues whatsoever. AMGs don't break down as the standard Benzes. I'm packing 500HP, 0-60 in 4.2, and it is classy (haven't lost a stoplight race yet). They say the "vette gets them wet." Well, this doesn't rhyme, but "the AMG makes them strip naked in your car on the way to their place." It is classy, and if you do a couple things to it (I put 20s on, added a more throaty exhaust and lowered it a little), it will look straight crazy. If you want more "shock and awe" look, go with the CLS.

At least test drive both the BMW and Benz.

I didn't say the BMW is "garbage". I'm saying that a 7 series will be tough to deal with maintenance wise.

I've owned two AMG benzes, and I've hadn't had one issue. My beamer friends are always moaning about repairs for their beamers.

Also, I'd recommend going to 6speedonline.com. It is primarily a porsche board, but the BMW and Benz sub-forums get heavy play and they can answer a lot of questions.

The F01 model was spoken for almost a year out, the dealer said.

Dude. First of all 60mph is less than 65mph or 85mph so you can enjoy that. Its not about max speed its about torque, its about N·m and all. If it was about max speed simple honda civic could reach that.

I'm not here to argue because i'm not going to waist my time, but, because you owned two amg models doesn't mean anything at all in terms of overall brand reliability... I can say same thing, that I owned 3 bmw's over 8 years and they never broke down... 7 and S class will always have that unreliable image about them because they're packed with latest technology and tons of new electronics

A year from now you'll be able to pick up a new body 750 for $35.

TL;DR - Buy used.

where can you find the 2007 S550's for 28k?

Already have a Porsche, so I'd just replace THAT with the Panamera if I bought one, hehe.

Follow-Up Question

Having decided to sell the Viper, WHAT'S THE LOWEST PRICE I SHOULD ACCEPT FOR THE VIPER, assuming it's in pristine shape (it is), it still has a warranty (it does), and I'm not under any sort of pressure to sell it (I'm not).

If you want more room, I would personally consider the M5. With just a couple of mods you are putting out silly amounts of horsepower in "M" V10 mode, but you can putter around without sucking a lot of gas by going back to V8 out of "M" mode. Plenty of room for driver and passengers as well...

Just my two cents here...

Here goes a buy it now 35k or best offer. Given it does have high mileage. I bet you could pick that one up for 30k. I have seen $28k. And I personally know someone who picked one up at a Manheim auction off of lease for $25k

Check my link out on the $35k or best offer S550.

Buy new. You'll be so upside down within 3 years your head will be spinning. And whether you finance or pay cash. You're going to lose $40-50k on your 7 series after the first 3 years. Sound investment. But this is GFY. Everyone can afford losing that type of cash.
