I had problems with HP too and I switched to SONY 18 months ago.

Laptop: SONY VAIO VPCEB15FH (15" screen with a keyboard including a numpad).
Desktop: SONY VAIO VCG-LV27VJ (All in one with a 24" screen).

GREAT and reliable machines :thumbsup

Sorry to hear that. :Oh crap

I was lucky and saved mine before the disaster occurred, or maybe I just postponed it.

The notebook would always get very warm in the upper left corner, close to the power button, especially after playing videos in fullscreen for some time. The fan would spin a lot, and the computer would become slow.

The solution for me was to remove all the dust which had accumulated inside the fan. Like you say, it was a pain to reach those areas of the machine. If someone likes doing puzzles then go for it :winkwink:

I didn't have the nerves to experiment with thermal paste or baking the chip.
After having removed all the dust from all the components the laptop has become usable and silent again.

I am not looking forward to next time it needs cleaning. It should probably be done before summer when heating problems usually arise.

Who cares? Better than throwing it out or buying a new motherboard(warranty expired).

And it doesn't always work.....

You don't have to tell me what it does :winkwink:
And indeed, it doesn't always work. But if the only other option is chucking it in the bin: what have you got to lose? That's right: nothing.

As I said if you have the time and nothing to lose go for it..... But for the average user who doesn't know much about computers reflowing a Mobo is a big step.

But I guess you did it so go figure...

Congratulations to the idiots. I have been using a PC for years. I never have issues. As far as hardware is concerned. Everyone knows that the last batch of MAC laptops all had battery issues. Every single person I know who has one had to replace the battery after a year. Yea, thats quality.

The funny part is, before even opening this thread. I knew there would be a MACer in here giving the exact same post you did.

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh my old laptops wasn't really useful after a year so only having to replace the battery is a good deal :pimp

As mentioned. When PCs become slow and unusable. It is the users fault. Not the hardwares fault. It is true most people have no idea what they are doing when it comes to actually using a computer. MACs are no different. My girlfriend has an iMAC. She downloaded all sorts of programs. AOL Desktop, Limewire. etc. It worked like shit until I got rid of all the garbage. A lot of people also want to buy $500-750 dollar laptops to do a lot of work on. If you have 2-3GB of memory and a dual core processors these days, there is only such much you can get out of it. The true different between a MAC and a PC is the operating system. If you think there is any different, you just don't know any better. Yes, ofcourse it is easier to stay virus free on a MAC, because why the fuck would someone who makes a virus make it for a MAC, when there are so many more PCs users. But if you have a good anti-virus and are not to cheap to pay the $30-35 dollars a year for a good anti-virus. It is your own fault. If when you install a piece of software on a windows machine and think it is ok to click through the install, not removing all of the toolbar installs that it comes with. So your IE has 7 tool bars. You shouldn't be using a computer. It is as simple as that. Everyone I know who has a MAC instead of a PC and they dont do graphics or video, this is the reason why they have it. Because they have no idea what they are doing, and think the same thing you do. That MAC is some kind of miracle computer. Keep Dreaming :)

Switched to a Macbook in 2006 after my Sony Vaio crapped out on me.

Since then, I've taken it to play shows with (I make music), spilled various drinks on it, took it with me for a ~8,000 mile trip across Canada and States, been using it it as a main workstation for programming/development for almost 5 years now.

The "Mac users are dumb" is a retarded excuse. I never used a Mac till 2006 and I was pretty smart with a university degree in computer science and everything. I guess I got dumber with experience.

Oh yeah, the Mac OS was originally based on Unix. Not the bloated POS that became Windows. It still has a native terminal with shell by default.

Linguist 02-26-2011 11:28 AM

And the new Macbook pro lineup just came out this Thursday. It smokes previous Mac lineups.

If you're getting a laptop, go get a Macbook pro, it'll last you a while. Check the 2011 Macbook pro benchmarks on the net.

Sandy Bridge i7 + Thunderbolt. Top of the line stuff. Get an aftermarket SSD into that and it'll be flying.

I run 2 Sony Vaio for 3 years now.
Battery in one recently went bad but no other problems. This machine is excellent.

Being a Unix admin, I know what MAC is built with. So why not just unix with a GUI and pay 3X less for the hardware? With a computer science degree, saying Windows is Bloated and thinking that MACOS isnt a bloated version of Unix. You aren't as smart as you think you are. Everyone has good experiences with all kinds of different things. Some people buy Ford cars and love them. Some people buy BMW and would never buy a ford. It does not mean Fords wont last longer then BMWs based on who is taking care of them.

funny thing, when I went to activate iphone in Apple store they had to login to a remote windows server to do so, I asked the guy if Macs are so much superior why do cell phone carries use windows servers, he did not have an answer for that one :) That kandra guy that is saying how to run business you need mac, it's the opposite, most software will run better on Windows because you can get twice as fast windows machine for the same price of your overpriced mac. Macs are for idiots who don't know wtf they are doing, the only thing that is trully usefull is iphone

I use Linux/BSD daily, would never use one as a desktop. I like things to look good. Unfortunately, the Linux geeks don't give a shit about looks. And that's fine. To each it's own. I find the Macs to be a nice blend of functionality and looks.

As for me not being smart, as the saying goes, good thing about being stupid is that you can always learn new things. I'll freely admit to being stupid (especially in a conversation where OS benefits are coming down to attacks on personal intelligence).

No one in real life business uses MACs unless it is for design/architecture/engineering on the desktop side. Every business runs on a Microsoft Active Directory server for user accounts with groups and permissions. They all use MS Exchange for email. And most companies run all of the business applications, such as accounting software etc on windows servers. Very few do it on Unix unless they have special database needs.

It's not the 90's anymore. Many of these companies simply run Windows.

The topic is about laptops, not desktops. I agree many, especially large, companies use the setup you mentioned, but it's 2011 and most IT startups and modern companies use cloud based setups.

Now compare a windows user on the setup you describe above having to login to his work's outlook email on his windows laptop from home. By the time that user is finally ready to write or reply to his first email I already did 10 of them on my MacBook and my company gmail.

For users on this forum, who mainly work just for themselves or for modern it companies, a cloud setup with a MacBook laptop just makes more sense if you care about optimizing your business as much as possible.

As for "mac is for dumb users" that don't know what they are doing. I have worked with windows all my life, I even already used PCs before windows even existed, I have worked with every windows system, including servers. I used to manage our own webservers (worked with freebsd and later slackware). I have always built and hardware upgraded my own computers. I am not some dumb user or newbie teen that doesn't know what he is doing. I was always very sceptic about Macs, until I actually tried one last year, and now I will never go back. Times have changed and remember we are talking about laptops here (even though I use my macbook as desktop replacement as well), there is simply no reason for people to stick with Windows laptops. Of course you can built a system with much better specs for less money and run linux, but for most regular users that's just not realistic.

I am positive if the topic starter would get a MacBook he would be coming back here and post something like "damn, I wish I had known this much sooner". That's what I hear from everyone that finally makes the switch.

At this point I don't think it matters fuck all which company you go with. I had 3 Toshibas and they all fucked up after a year or so, not even able to use them, not to mention 'little shit' like buttons permanently broken, but the nail in the coffin is when the screens went out of 2 of them, been using a Gateway now for at LEAST 3 years and I love it. The only thing I can complaing about is the a/w/s/d keys are pressed down from too much gaming but they still work perfectly, just work in a touchpad sort of way lol.
