It would be best to check with your nearest animal shelter or veterinarian in regards to state regulations.

A bonus in doing so is that if you are serious about getting one, they will be the ones who will nurse your monkey back to health. You can find out exactly what kind of experience they have with that particular animal.

Sure, I felt that someone here knew something and it seems to be true. Thanx :thumbsup

I don't think those ones with the big red asses are legal to own, if that's what you were thinking.

When I was growing up my family owned a zoo in Massapequa NY. It was called the Massapequa Zoo and Kidde Park. Themed around a monkey mountain constructed by Frank Buck, in his time a famous animal trapper. That mountain housed around 300 monkeys originally from India. People came from all over the world to see the mountain; it was truly an amazing site to see. I asked to work with the animals rather than out front where we had built rides for the kids. Well they may have looked cute but I came to learn real soon they were filthy, ferocious animals some weighing as much as 80 pounds that could kill a man. They almost killed me, my uncle actually had to shoot one of them.
Stay away from that type of monkey for sure.

We also had a little Spider Monkey that was housed in a different part of the zoo. She was really cute and adorable weighed less than 10 pounds. I remember her jumping on my chest and clinging to me when I would feed her and clean her cage. When they sold the property I really wanted to take her home and I could have but decided against it because of all the work involved taking care of her. They are like babies that never grow up. So if you really want a Monkey I would suggest the Spider Monkey, but I?d give it a lot of though first.

Thanks for the great reading suggestions.
Please, are Capuchin monkeys considered dangerous?

Nope, I would categorize them same as the Spider Monkey or Squirrel Monkey
Also be sure to check the laws in your state, maybe even the county.

Out of curiosity why do you want a Monkey? I know they look adorable and
can be cute and cuddly but there also is another side to them. Not so much a danger (the breeds we’re talking about) but the work involved. Some live to be 20 to 25 years old. Basically it’s a life long commitment that most people won’t endure. They are noisy and extremely active during the day (if they’re not it’s a sure sign of being sick) need plenty of room with some sort of jumping environment, especially the smaller Monkeys can jump 6 to 10 feet, They get sick just like a child maybe even more so and need regular Vet care. Also very messy and sure to destroy any area you keep them in. They really don’t belong in captivity.

I almost bought a Cappuchin monkey when I was younger. I talked to a breeder and she told me that it was like having a perpetual 2 year old child and when they reached puberty the males start biting and throwing shit..

that was enough for me to decide to not own a monkey..

i think they would be fun for a bit, but the experience would get old really fast..

Smart and humane decision.

They just jerk off all day and don't listen to anything you say. Not a good pet. Imagine the worst kid in the world and then times it by two and you have the average monkey living in a home.

Rangermoore 02-28-2011 01:14 AM

OMG that’s right they do masturbate, at least the ones in the mountain did and it was hysterical, the mountain had a 3 or 4 foot wall around it, people would us the ledge to put food they purchased on it and throw it to them or just lean and watch the Monkeys.

Sure enough in no time at all one of the males would just position himself in front of them and start wanking. Keep in mind back then if you used the word Sex, you whispered it, let alone begin to explain masturbation.

I couldn’t help laughing when a family would be watching them and all of sudden see that. Ummm c’mon kids lets go see the Bears... This thread brought back some fond memories, wish I could find a picture of that mountain it was really something to see.
