That really sucks. :(
R.I.P Dave. Any word on the cause of death? In his last FB update he was saying something about having a hard time sleeping. "Yet another crappy sleep... and another day on the couch. New ultra portable laptop should be coming today though... *weak smile*" "JF: misery loves company. I don't know when I'm going to... feel better again, been like this for a month. Couch and tv are my new found friends. I can't believe all the crap that is on daytime tv lol." Very sad news. Seemed like a nice guy.. |
Although I don't know him personally, I'd like to offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Death of a friend and/or loved one is never easy to deal with, and we truly hope those of you who were close to him can celebrate his life while mourning his death.
|
there are many causes of death which initially seem like a minor flu or even food poisoning. I knew someone who died that had very minor symptoms of nausea and then one day he finally went to the hospital and it was too late.
|
Damn I really hope this is some kind of mixup. If gfy had a flag it really needs to go half mast right now.
|
Wow RIP very sad news he was so young and enjoying life

One of the Industries best has fallen..... rest well my friend.

Always sad to lose a young soul from our industry family. RIP Quiet, you'll be missed.
|
This news is so sad. Here was a guy who made his money, walked away and was enjoying life. At least he got to enjoy life more than most. You never know when your time is up.
I can't think of anyone that provided more motivation or hope for others here on gfy. Quiet is not only a legend but a guy who changed many of our lives without ever meeting us. I feel for his family, fiancée and friends. |
Condolences to Dave and his family, he will be missed.
|
Wow. I always loved his posts, and actually thought about him yesterday, even though I never exchanged a personal message with him. I was in the Dollar Store, standing in line, and looking at the trac phones hanging on the rack. It made me think of a post by him where cell phones were being discussed, and his thoughts that just because you had lots of money didn't mean you had to spend it.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. |
I would have landed the task of announcing this new to the GFY community to someone that could actually spell "tonight" ...
|
Ah crap. RIP Dave :(

Please don't sidetrack things though. At least not in this thread. |
I got the same email from Julie as well. I considered Dave a friend. I just can't believe it. How something could happen to him of all people is shocking.
Like Fletch, I am seriously kicking myself for never taking the time to visit him and Julie at the new place. Damn. I just can't believe this. I really enjoyed seeing him enjoy life as much as he did in the past couple of years. I got a little worried when he disappeared into the Thai jungle for a while, lol but I've never seen a guy enjoy his days snowboarding, hiking and biking and all the way he did. And he was really really happy with his fiancée Julie. He was in heaven. You don't usually see guys that content with everything about their lives the way he was. Even without having to say a word he was inspirational because he is the only guy I know under 50 who was able to put work to the side and just do exactly what made him happy. He's definitely the only guy I know like that from the original webmaster class of 2000. Time flies. How this can happen as fast as it did I will never understand. And why him? Damn. He was a really great guy. |
Can't tell i ever even noticed him posting much tho its been almost 10 years here on gfy. He was lucky making it right and earning a real coin.
May he rest in peace. |

Never met Dave but did chat with him a few times. He inspired me as well way back in the day. 38 is so young but yeah he did spend his last years actually living instead of in front of a computer. Take care of yourselves people:2 cents:
|
I'm really curious to find out what caused his death. The last person that I knew that seemed perfectly healthy one day then gone a few months later was my best friend's Mom and it was Pancreatic Cancer.
|
Very Sad news!!! I will miss Dave;-( My best to Julie and his family.
|
This is terrible news. RIP Quiet. He helped me out tremendously when I first started in this business. Can't even think right now, this is awful.
|
shocking :Oh crap
a wise young man with a plan, he wanted to retire by 30 to do what he wanted to do and he did it - just a tragic shame his life was so short. i remember getting on GFY in 2002 and reading his posts, he would never mention his site, and nobody else would either. i finally found a clue via thehun and there it was - the quiet empire. smart guy, he saw something years before others did and worked his ass off in something close to anonymity. i know others who copied or were inspired by his formula and made their own fortunes. as for sacrificing his 20's, financial and career success has that price for everybody not just adult webmasters. unless you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth. :glugglug <------ the ultimate quiet tribute, most of his posts ended with the happy little glug glug |

Wow! He was someone I really looked up to in this business. He did it on his terms from start to finish. How can you not admire that? RIP guy.
For you guy - :glugglug |

|
snowboarding/biking traveling the world, he seemed like the most healthy laid back guy around :(
wtf kills a guy like that in a month... :Oh crap RIP Dave, condolences to his fiancée and family. |
Hat's off to a true pioneer in the industry - condolences to family and friends. Although I am sure a private matter, how does something like this happen so young?
|
Sad news indeed RIP Dave :Oh crap
|
Such a shame to pass away at such a young age.
RIP Dave |
I don't know him ..... I do know of his posts. Rare around here is a man that makes it big but does so without a condescending attitude. He was helpful, insightful, obviously hard working. Between his work and play he lived many more years than his headstone will show. RIP and thank you.
. |
RIP man saw the email as well and thought it couldn't be real
|
I did not have the pleasure of knowing the man personally ...
My condolences to his friends and family. |

I have to admit, when I got the email from her, that was the last Dave I expected it to be. RIP, Dave. |
he was one of the nicest guys around here :(
RIP |
My heartfelt condolences to his family. Rest in peace Dave.

Yep it's true I got the message from Julie as well. :-(
Dave was a great guy and he was living an amazing life! Absolutely inspirational how he made so much money and one day just shut it all down and walked away. He lived the life most of us could only dream of and talk about. I emailer him a few weeks back about a ski trip we are planning for the summertime in chile. He of course had skied there and knew everyone to contact and where to go. He seemed more exicited than me about the trip and he wasn't even going haha!! I never met Dave but felt like I knew him very well from all the Facebook messages and emails back and forth over the years. He was a valued customer of ours and a great person to deal with. I find it especially sad because this was a guy that didn't just retire from out business and sit on the couch all day. This was a guy that climbed mountains and skied or biked EVERY single day of his life. He had just bought a new place in Fernie BC and was engaged to be married. It's sad that god takes the good ones like Dave so early :-( Rip buddy you will be missed badly!! |
this seriously sucks. a lot.
RIP Dave :( |
wow :(((((( he gave me some great advice on a car back in 2002, we really connected when we were both going through some relationship issues back then
very very sad news, he was a very cool guy |
my condolences, he was a good dude
|
sad :( i liked reading his posts, condolences and may he rip.
|
One of the handful of people whos posts I actually took the time to read. RIP Dave. :glugglug
|
Very sad news.
Let it be known that the strongest person in the room is usually the one with the softest voice. R.I.P Quiet |
This is a serious bummer. My condolences to all.
|
Wow. Just Wow. He posted some pictures on another board recently about a new home purchase. And I loved all his pics from the place in Whistler and his skiing/bumming around travels. I think he's probably one of the few people who on their death bed didn't say "I should have done ______" He was enjoying life to the fullest. I saw another post of his where he was looking for health care in another country - IIRC a transplant of some sort where he wouldn't have had to go through the regular (read: long) waits here in North America. I figured it was for a relative or friend. Sad to realize it was probably for him. While I've never met him I've had a lot of convos with him on a business and personal level over SO many years. Just an over all good guy.
RIP Dave and condolences to his family and friends. |
Wow what a shocker!
way too young to go :( R.I.P Quiet |
