hmm the best were already mentioned but you should also check out: "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "The Sound of War", "9th Company" & "Tunnel Rats" are quite enjoyable movies.

pearl harbour, Saving Private Ryan and that japanese war movie, can't quite remember the name. I think its called "Letters from iwo jima"

Homegrown Video, war is hell... but war movies are... entertainment (awww, hell)

Fuck that... Bridge over River Kwai is ok only in that sanitized blockbuster sort of way, but having known someone that actually was interned there, it is grossly innacurate and disgraceful to the people that actually survived the experience. Much closer to the truth and the grisliness of that episode in history is "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence"

My recommendations are:

"Iron Cross" - Sam Peckinpah's film based on the real life exploits of a highly decorated, anti-nazi german commando during WW2

"Seven Samurai" - Classic and still holds up to this day

"Empire of the Sun" - I think this is one of Speilberg's best war films... resonates for me more than Ryan or even Schindler in retrospect

"The Thin Red Line" - elegaic, tragic, and unlike 99% of the uber-patriotic-quasi-fascist fair that is typical of so many war movies

"Breaker Morant" - How many other films do you know about the Boer War?

The Truth Hurts 04-07-2011 01:54 PM

jarhead
the grey zone
generation kill (hbo miniseries)
hart's war
redacted

Some classics of ancient warfare...

I know some people hate this movie but if you can find the right version it is certainly better than a lot of people give credit for it... "Alexander the Great" Oliver Stone's version. Pretty amazing depictions of phalanx style warfare and two incredible battle scenes that serve as bookends to the film

"Musa" (The Warrior) Korean knights trying to fight their way out of Mongol controlled lands, pretty entertaining...

"Mongol" which is just a great movie about you guessed it... Ghengis Khan, but before he became Khan

Cyber Fucker 04-07-2011 03:07 PM

Surprisingly, or... maybe not surprisingly, no one has mentioned "Casualties of war".

CYF 04-07-2011 03:29 PM

I watched Defiance last night on netflix, it was good :thumbsup

I would add...

Battle of Britain.....shot with real aircraft without CGI
Dunkirk
The Cruel Sea - The war in the Atlantic
Sink the Bismark
Battleground - same story as band of brothers but made by people who were there
Attack
Army of Shadows _ French resistance movie
Come and See - Russian POV on fascist occupation
Soldiers of Orange - Verhovans film on the war in Holland before "Basic Instint"
More modern films "letters from Iwo Jimo" great film of America humanity...
The Bridge - German film, a few boys defend a bridge on the last days of war

I would like to add too

All Quiet on the Western Front - the best war film ever 1930 version

Bold Venture 04-07-2011 07:41 PM

A Walk In the Sun.

Doubt if it would qualify as one of the best but worth mentioning.

Used this at work

Enemy At The Gates

I once explained this movie to my boss,
"I'm not cannon fodder, I'm the sniper. Armies have their function, individuals have their function."
Neither of us work there now, but 8 years later still lunch when we can.

I like historically accurate war movies.- Based on real facts

Stalingrad - Is the infantrymen version of Das boot. 100% accurate about the biggest battle ever fought in human history. 800,000 soldiers died in that 6 month battle. It's in German with English subtitles.

Ride with the Devil- One of my favorite books made into a movie. It's about the civil war and how MO could not decide if they were fighting for the North/South. It turned into a State civil war and where the term Bushwacker came from.

150 years later they still fight. Living in KC, people from KS & MO still hate each other.
As in cop from MO fighting KS cop over who was going to bust a guy who drove drunk over the state line. The drunk snunk off, got home & free.
I've been stopped for "driving while Kansan"
