I only have 3 Blu Ray: Transformers 1,2 and Avatar. I stopped buying dvds for myself after my 1st son... My dvd players are full of yo gabba gabba stuff.

cooldude7 05-12-2011 11:48 PM

No but I'll take anything that's free .,
as i m looking to buy ps3 :P

I have a blu ray drive on the computer but no standalone player. The difference really is quite noticeable, but I can't justify getting gouged so badly. I'll wait a few more years for prices to come down.

Had a deal on amazon last week. Buy the 160GB model for $300 and get a $50 amazon gift certificate after the order ships.

On a proper HD flatscreen I have to disagree.

I have watched 6 GB+ movies on a 71 inch 1080P TV and they look great. You would have to do a side by side comparison with the original blu-ray to see any difference at all. Keep in mind these are full 1080P videos with DTS or dolby digital sound.

These are much better quality than netflix or any streaming service.

Most of the newer ones take over half the disk. Even older ones take up 18-20. There are plenty of PS3 games that use up all or most of the space.

DVD movies always had to be compressed from the original movie to make them fit on the disk.

A lot of that space is taken up by things like multiple audio tracks, commentary, etc., usually in Full HD audio. That shit takes up a lot of space. If you take out the HD audio and replace it with regular DTS or dolby digital, it saves tons of space, which is how all the torrents come. I have seen the odd one that has HD audio too, and their file sizes are much bigger.

$6 to $30 per title unless it's a box set.

Good idea. 470 lines of resolution is all anyone needs. 1080 is over kill. And as for that uncompressed pure digital audio? Meh. Sound isn't that important, right?

1080 is great. I think when they go to 2160 it will be overboard.

SomeCreep 05-14-2011 08:38 AM

Yes. I was being sarcastic to Rochard who thinks DVD is good enough quality. Obviously not got a good enough screen or sound system to appreciate uncompressed audio and 1080P. Or is deaf and blind.

Scott McD 05-14-2011 03:05 PM

hell yes, I'm picking up that and the extended lotr trilogy.

Redrob 05-14-2011 08:17 PM

I only buy blu-rays if it is a movie that I really like to watch over and over, the movie has some really good special effects or scenery, the movie is a "collector's edition" with extended footage and commentary, and, finally, the price is right.

ya, I'm trying to decide whether or not I should get all the Harry Potter special editions or the year 1-7 sets.
