I think they did too... but she is going to be fine, in fact, I think she will be better for having NOT won. That girl has big things in her future and she wouldn't have if she was under an American Idol contract... sometimes it's better NOT to come in first place. :thumbsup

Sarah_Jayne 05-19-2011 11:32 PM

The word is 'idol' and I look at the whole show as a marketing competition. Scotty has the 'idol' thing perfectly. He has played his audience rather well. He has that cross around his neck on display the whole time. He won't sing anything too 'naughty' but yet will smolder into the camera at just the right moments to make those 13 year old girls cream. I can totally see his face in Teen Bop or whatever those magazines are called now.

He is the most marketable and he will do a duet and probably a tour with Lauren and they will produce 'are they an item' fake stories and market them both with skill.

Same deal with James...he will do much better in the end not to be tied to an Idol contract. Remember, Adam Lambert didn't win.

Long live Pia!!!

Am I the only one that loves how AI markets their sponsors on the show Sure, it's annoying, but did you see the 15 minute commercial for the movie "Super 8"? Will probably get the movie much more exposure than just a couple commercials...from an advertiser's perspective, they have to love the rub AI gives them.

Just get up there and sing dammit!

I miss the good old days and Haley brought it back with her Led Zeppelin rendition. :)

As I watched that shitty "performance" I kept thinking there are 10 or so Idol contestants in the front row going "Are you fucking kidding me? *I* am no longer on the show, but this whore is up there wasting stage space?"

Sarah_Jayne 05-20-2011 12:39 AM

On the show before last, I had wondered why one of them had a Super 8 camera in the hands for the homecoming thing. Then we get the tv equivalent of an FPA in the middle of tonight's show for the film. Simply brilliant marketing.

She really did well with her farewell song....kinda like took away the thunder from the 2 finalist....hope she will do well like Daughtry and other non winners :thumbsup

They certainly do a great job in the commercial aspect. Last night they had that trio of Italian guys and they seemed pretty much out of place for that venue. I think the people behind have IDOL also have a record label and if the trio were signed by the label it would be a huge introduction to their American market by having their trio debut in front of 30 million people.

FORD and Coke get in their pretty good as well. I'm sure FORD supplies them with whatever vehicles they need and they used to give cars to the finalists. Coke has their brand sitting on the judges desk and that must be a paid product placement.

The Men here are getting laughed at for watching Idol because some perceive it to be a show for little girls but it's also a business marketing machine. Advertising, product placement, monetization, talent recruitment, merchandising and so on. It only takes a second to realize those are the very same qualities valued so highly in the industry this board is based on.

One way to improve yourself is to analyze someone that is more successful and then apply that knowledge to yourself. :)

Chris Daughtry came in 4th and look at him. He and Adam used Idol for what it is, I think. They knew they weren't going to win, I honestly think they knew... but they used it as a platform. They knew what they were doing and I almost think Haley did too. This isn't by no means the last we'll be hearing from her.

I loved how she played to Tyler in her last song and basically shook a "naughty finger" in the direction of Jennifer and Randy and at the very end she gave Tyler a big hug and was a little indifferent to Jennifer. She was pissed at them and she had a right to be.

I have been a big fan of the way the judging was handled this time up to the point Jennifer and Randy slammed all over Haley for her choice of her "Inspirational Song", she chose what inspired her and didn't need a damn bit of judgement about it other than how she did it, but to tell her that wasn't the right song for her was way out there and to degrade her the way those two did pissed me off. You can't tell someone what inspires them... they were both out of line and Tyler let that be known.

Lauren will win. I knew it during that phony setup bullshit with Steven Tyler during her audition. The winners of American Idol are pre-determined before the contest even starts. They like a good story. This is why Pia had to go.

I cringed too when they gave her all the criticism for her song choice. At that point in the competition the judges should be careful as to what they say because it could easily sway voters.

I also think the judges meant well and their criticism was misunderstood. The guy picked a song about 911 and it was just after they captured Osama so that feeling was refreshed across the nation. The other girl picked a song and tied it to the recent Tornado disaster that was weighing heavily on everyones mind. Two smart song choices that could capture the nation.

Haley picked a lesser known song that obviously had a special meaning to her but was nothing as dramatic and current as the other two song choices. So what Randy and JLo were trying to say is this is a competition, the song choice was about inspiration and even though it was personal to you it wasn't a choice that would capture the audience in the way the others did.

They were trying to tell her to pick a song that will get her the most votes and the first step is to pick something popular and relatable. Her choice wasn't as " cunning " as the others and I think the Judges were trying to tell her to look at the bigger picture.

It's really something that should have been advised or coached to her in private.

Oh I get that totally, and as someone who's married and raising band members myself, I get totally what they "meant" by it, but in a situation like that, they should have left that part of it out and let her do her thing. Simply because the average voter, which is what counts here, is going to listen to JLo because they respect her, so when she slammed her, that's all they needed to hear. They should have and could have made it a current thing and spun it as her inspiration was about our planet which is a very current thing. I am just saying they should have spun it in a more positive direction as it was what inspired her and they should have handled it as such.

As a member of a house FULL of musicians and artists, I totally got the marketing angle they were spinning it into, but in the area of which this WAS, and inspiration, it just wasn't cool.

Can you imagine if the panel was Steven as he is now, David Lee Roth when he was in his prime and Courtney Love always wacked out.

Now that would make for some entertaining commentary. :1orglaugh

I hope Howdy Doody doesn't win it all.
