They have radio ads running currently, they've spent millions branding through radio. I'd say one their best branding tools during their surge in the 80's was the selling of their t shirts. It was the "cool" thing to wear and brought them tons of cheap exposure.

I have had In n Out burgers once in my entire life. Gabe introduced me to them when I was in OC. If I remember right (was a few years back now!) they tasted pretty good.
