fuck that. i heard Red Box makes a TON of money. they bank on people being lazy and keeping the movie for an extra day

Do you realize that DirecTV (and I think cable too) use MPEG-4 compression ? Netflix online is not any worse in quality on good broadband connection, especially their newly encoded HD films.

My local redbox wouldnt accept my return one day becuase the machine was malfunctioning, and they did charge me for the extra day.

simple math question. $9 a month to $16 a month is a sizable increase, enough that their net income after admin costs more than doubles. they could lose half of their subscribers and still be in as good a position.

with no real competition in the field worth mentioning, they can get away with raising their prices.

Yep, I'm sure when they ran the numbers and assumed a worst case scenario of instantly losing 10-15% of subscribers with this increase, their revenue will still jump up and their net profit margin will definitely go up. As Eric said though, I'm sure this is a step to make sure their revenue is where it needs to be with the expected steeper licensing expenses approaching.

RedBox is competition. Anyways Netflix has ALWAYS stated that the end game is streaming. So the fewer people that rent DVD means less money spent on DVDs less money spent on postage. Not to mention storage, envelope costs etc etc. money saved by fewer renter can be used to aquire stremaing content. For those that stay that extra money helps aquire more streaming content. I doubt Netflix made money giving people 1 DVD at a time unlimited AND streaming for $10 a month. I doubt they make money on the new 1 DVD at time tier for $8 and no streaming. All the people on other messageboards complaining have no clue what it takes to run a business. They expect everything for basically free or they are being "fucked over" or "raped".

I wasn't aware of that, I will have to check out the Amazon catalog. I have our Netflix account on pause for the summer, as we barely watch tv then. I also have DirecTV, and use that On Demand service now and then.

I also have a Blockbuster streaming account, if they are even still in business. I have no idea.

I'm going to drop the dvd part and just hit up the redbox instead. Streaming is still nice, and hopefully they add more content quicker.

I thought the same thing until I subscribed to Netflix. I have DirecTV too with every channel and I still get stuff on Netflix that is not on DirecTV yet or that you have to pay per view. I have an Apple TV on 3 of my home TVs and it allows me to stream you tube, Itunes, Netflix and alot more to each high def large screen TV. It is a great setup.

Yes it sucks they are raising their price so much. However it is a great service and if it allows them to license more movies, it is worth the increase IMO.

If you're getting a free DVR you're lucky because DirecTv normally charges for it. Anyways 100+ channels with 99.99% of the content being crap. I guess if 99.99% crap is worth $1000, $1500 or more per year to you go for it. Ever watch TV at 3 AM? I bet there are more channels with informercials then showing actual programs. That's worth $1000, $1500 a year?

A "few dozen" of your favotire shows? Really. I can't find just a DOZEN shows worth my time on TV.
