Why would anyone go through all that time, money and discomfort just for themselves?

It seems to me that if a person didn't care what anyone thought about their physical looks or appearance they wouldn't bother with anything.

It really gets mental when someone is beautiful to begin with and for some reason feels the need to be more beautiful by spending time, money and enduring all that discomfort which often sets them back a notch or two from their original appearance.
