Have any of you thought about this for more than 5 seconds?
You aren't going to wake up one day and look out your window to see a barren post apocalyptic hell-scape with roving gangs of Mad Max style criminals. If America collapses, it will be a long, slow decline over years and decades. It won't suddenly go to hell with people trading seeds as currency. Britain, France, Spain, those were all super powers at one time and they simply faded into being regular countries. They aren't wastelands filled with gun toting criminals, in fact, many people argue that those countries are better than America. I guess all I would ask is for people to show me an example of a first world country that declined into this Mad Max style scenario everyone seems to think is coming. |

Kids are playing video games, and are rewarded for head shots and accuracy. Now these kids are desensitised to killing and the goal is 1 shot 1 kill. http://www.thefreeradical.ca/researc...eGrossman.html |

That, and the fact that you wouldn't be taking a life for no reason. We aren't talking about pulling the trigger to kill a random person for no reason. |

It's one thing to think about it, or do it on a computer screen. The problem is the odds are the guys coming at you have less to lose and more to gain than those they're going after. Imagine a bunch of guys from the "hood" also armed to the teeth, coming after you. Being trained to fire a gun, shooting a deer, or having a cupboard full of weapons, Isn't proof you can actually kill someone when they're standing in front of you with a gun. http://www.military-sf.com/Killing.htm http://american_almanac.tripod.com/grossm1.htm Quote:
Here's a lot more to read. http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#sc...w=1280&bih=811 Go read it and think about it. They were fighting next to their buddies, trying to stop them from getting killed and still the found it tough to shoot to kill. Mr Middleclasssuburban is kidding himself, odds are the perp will shoot him with his own weapon. |
people that worry about the collapse of society and stock up for it are generally scumbags and con-man that realize that without cops everyone is going to get back at them when the cops and courts disappear.
i get along with most people. my brothers and sisters will work together when shit falls apart. |

We aren't talking about soldiers being sent to a foreign land to attack. We are talking about people on their own land, in their own houses fighting to survive. These are two vastly different things and I guarantee you it's much easier pulling the trigger over and over on people who are invading your space. When you are protecting yourself and your loved ones you become quite the killer very fast, or die. |
I've been gearing up for years. where the fuck were you people? oh yeah, sucking Bush's ass ...

I've been around enough and seen enough brutality to know that if shit really does hit the fan you're as good as dead if you don't have a back up plan as in a good defense. Take this thread as some overall good advice, because some of these suggestions may just save your life down the road. |

But yeah short of a planet wide natural disaster the Mad Max scenario is just plain silly. But I think things could go to shit overnight. Gas prices could double, the stock market could crash totally in a 24 hour period. We live in a age where all information is instant and that means we make decisions instantly. Mass selling off of stocks and bonds would totally ruin the worlds economy. |

Things that could cause "mad max" type conditions would not be financially related but more likely from weather, disease (biological), nuclear (war) etc... In the past 2,000 years all of the above have caused 1st world countries to experience long periods of time where there was chaos and every man for himself. The problem with this thread (besides the typical GFY of everyone thinking they know everything about everything) is that you have several different people talking about different things. |

Wow you guys sound like wild west cowboys lol

Remember how after 9/11 people came together and got shit done?
The same would happen if we had a collapse, which won't happen because we will take out too many people with us. You doomsday idiots are really under-estimating Americans. Our government may be fucked up but we still have a country full of great people. |
If other countries didn't let Greece collapse - a country that does nothing, what makes you think they will let us collapse?
We have nukes. We win. |
I also expect a long slow decline.
With regions that collapse harder for short periods, then are pacified. But it's the long slow decline that you should be fearing. Road warrior is mostly male fantasy. It's kinda pleasant to imagine a social order in which we can be ferocious males again. Fuck, I sure enjoy that fantasy well enough myself. The long slow decline will be far more humiliating. With very few oppurtunities to be glory-seeking ferocious males. Still, buy guns and tools anyway. Well, technically, you shoulda bought them long ago, because you'd have to have been pretty fucking suburban not to have seen this coming for years. I rather like that bullet swager/reloading press someone posted. |
after reading this thread i think it's safer to travel to Afghanistan than to the US :winkwink:

Food? Maybe. Shelf life is a big issue. If nothing happens and food prices stay low in 4 years who would want to buy your dehydrated food supply? nobody Solar cells? Maybe. Problem with those is that as they advance the price goes down. 5 years ago $10 per watt was great. Today $3 per watt is good. See where I'm going with this?...................... |
