Your confusing a few things here.

I believe (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) the US Military, generally speaking, cannot be called up against US citizens. (Although I'm sure there are some wacked out laws about martial law that gives the military a lot of power). However, this is not the same at the state level. At Kent State it wasn't the "National Guard" but instead the "Ohio National Guard". The difference is staggering. The state national guard(s) takes orders from the governor, not the US government.

In other words, the President cannot send in the Marines to deal with a protest in NYC, but the Governor of NY can in fact send in the NY National Guard.

This is what I'm getting at. He should know better.

When I left the military, I sold my uniforms on the way out the door. I never had any plans on wearing them again, so there was no sense keeping them.

And if not, and you're sure that the state national guard can't take orders from the U.S. govt., then what were all those National Guard doing in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Remember when Katrina happened...and on the news there were politicians criticizing the Iraq war and saying that the reason that Louisiana didn't have enough National Guard was because they were all in Iraq.

What's the real story then? I have never heard of a Federal National Guard before. Everyone I ever knew was in a State National Guard. Educate me on this. :)
