Donna Godchaux http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/donnagodchaux1.jpg here is a c&p from wiki that tells her story in a nutshell --- "Donna was born in Florence, Alabama. Prior to 1970, she had worked as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, appearing on songs by Elvis Presley and Cher. She met future fellow Grateful Dead member Keith Godchaux and they married in 1970. Donna introduced Keith to Jerry Garcia after Garcia's performance at San Francisco's Keystone Korner in October 1971. At the time, Donna Jean was not working as a musician. She joined the band shortly afterwards, remaining a member until February 1979. http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/donnagodchaux3.jpg Donna provided back-up and lead vocals in the group's music. During their membership in the Grateful Dead, the couple also issued the mostly self-written Keith and Donna album in 1975 with Jerry Garcia as a Keith and Donna Band member. In turn, they performed as part of the Jerry Garcia Band. Keith and Donna's son, Zion "Rock" Godchaux of BoomBox, was born in 1974. After the Grateful Dead, the couple started the Heart of Gold Band. http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/donnagodchaux2.jpg Donna did not perform again with any Grateful Dead band members until after the death of Jerry Garcia. Shortly after her husband's death in 1980, Donna Jean turned to religion. She married bassist David MacKay (former Fiddleworms member and bassist for Donna Jean Godchaux Band) and the couple moved to Florence, Alabama to work at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios." http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/donnagodchaux4.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_Jean_Godchaux http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/donnago...lwithdead2.gif http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/donnago...lwithdead1.gif --- Dark Star Orchestra + The Donna Jean Godchaux Band (Feb 2011) http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/darkstaranddonna.jpg more pics and info http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/...star-orchestra --- Good morning! Perfect way to end a quiet, beautiful, and productive weekend for me... :) ?There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go, no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone.? - Jerry Garcia :stoned ADG |

Homegrown is Gratefully Deadicated...
Got on the bus at one of the last Keith and Donna shows in 79 - been to many of the shows mentioned in this thread since I was essentially on perma-tour through much of the 80s/90s. Still pretty much on tour since I will catch Furthur whenever possible. Met so many wonderful people through the experiences it just staggers the mind.
Actually had the revelation about getting into adult on a beautiful trip at the Greeks in 87 after ingesting a tab with a "globe" on it... out of this world. Favorite bumper sticker: "Who are the Grateful Dead and why are they following me?" Favorite show: Well it all rolls into one, and melts into a dream... One of my fave tunes... |

The Dead in Seattle, 30-odd years ago: I haven't been to a Furthur show in years, but I'm planning on catching one of the New Year's shows in Dec.: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nGdmEPpRJo...YE2011Home.jpg If you are coming down to SF for any/all of the NYE shows, and want to get together again, just flash the moonbat signal (mi batcave es su batcave)... :stoned ?What if all tomorrow brings is ashes and glass, and I can't tell you child, "this too shall pass" If all the world were windswept, cold and gray And in the end there's nothing left to say" ...and one more reason: ?I shared the stage with Jerry for 35 years and think about him every time I pick up my guitar. This special coming together is one way to celebrate all that Jerry has given us - to feel alive and good with Jerry's spirit and smile.? - Bob Weir Keep on dancing... :banana Peace and Love, ADG |
This year is the first year I unfortunately will not be making the NYE shows - and it is killing me because word on the street is Phil Lesh is planning to semi-retire and only do shows in their new studio.
Furthur had definitely been knocking some shows out of the park and I would take seeing shows like those over a lot of the late era 90's shows when Jerry's health was so poor. ADG - will you be at the Dec 8 Staples party Kings game? Planning on coming down for that day's scrimmage and soiree. |

In light of the recent OWS movement, lets take a second to realize we have made little on the war on government. This shit has been on a loop from 68' and it looks like the same movie????? This Darkness has got to give! |
And if any one remembers how far this shit goes......
Viola Blues from WAYYYYYY Back |
This is kind of awkward, since the Dead has long been about the music, and transcending politics, and I prefer to not turn this into a political thread... :)

Been to a couple of dead shows... never made it past the parking lot :error

Most of the Dead shows I've attended, I only smoked marijuana (now I rarely smoke, preferring to vaporize and consume my cannabis through edibles). I have even attended even some Dead shows completely straight/sober - now THAT was a trip, lol. I was never that big into acid, as I find it too intense, the dosages too variable, and I like being in full control most of the time. I don't recall exactly the last time I did acid, but it's been at least a decade or two. For me, mushrooms are easier to take (once you get past the taste), and a more mellow trip. Without having a flashback, I am capable of recalling some of my acid experiences and the sensations fairly vividly, especially if I am enjoying some strong cannabis and listening to some trippy music. Finishing up another all nighter (lots of them lately), nothing nicer to take the edge off then some Dead jams and a vape of Jack Herer... :stoned ADG |
Tonight's the night... :)

Back in 1985 at a Hampton, VA show after they fucked up a song Jerry said, "We'll keep playing until we get it right. Looks like we'll be playing forever." The whole crowd went nuts.
|
What an uplifting show!!! I feel refreshed, renewed, and ready to face a brand new year... :)
The Furthur show wrapped up right around midnight, starting with Jack Straw, and appropriately enough finishing with Touch of Grey, inserting in the famous line from Jack Straw at the end, "We can share the women, we can share the wine..." :stoned Quote:
Have a great New Year everyone - try to live a little, give a little more, and fill your heart with love this year... :) Peace and Love, ADG |
