The problem with that advice is that you're completely at the mercy of Google. Get penalized and your income is wiped out overnight.

No not at all. Obviously google is an important traffic source and we'd love to have more of it but the majority of our overall traffic is from non-search engine sources

Its a lot easier to push traffic in and out of one big site than it is dozens of smaller ones. For example, I can push TAC onto page one of several major toplists (yeah I know they are old hat these days) and theres no way I could do that with dozens of smaller sites.

When we started, we got up to about a dozen different domains until we figured it out. Now we have 250 sites all on the one domain. Can you imagine the headache of trying to promote 250 seperate domains ?

If you're using TAC to send to those toplists you're a madman. If you're not, you're not :)

Some comes from links on TAC but a lot comes from 2 or 3 feeder sites we use

Traffic is hilariously enough "outside of the box", self sustaining and free.

Also started another website that is un-monetized as of yet and did 40,000 uniques yesterday.

Eventally you will realise that theres only so many smaller sites that you can handle. About 7 years agoe I think we got to 15 - 20 sites each with a few thousand hits a day and maybe $500 a month per site when we realised that to get any bigger we had to merge.

Now we push around 100,000 uniques a day through TAC and revenues (not sure I should say this) about $25 - 30k per month. Thers no way you could that with a bunch of small standalone sites

As I understand it, Google is only downranking what it considered are non / poor content sites (ie link farms etc) so providing your main site has some decent content then you should be fine. Infact, weve seen an increase in google traffic recently

My advice, is pick one domain and make it your main site. Perhaps with a few feeder sites to get it going

All of what kush said. Also don't forget that you merged all those standalone sites to create the one bigger site to give you your current status (or at least help towards it, anyway), so that method does also work :thumbsup
