My god you're right, what was I thinking?!! I've been here since day one but only now realize that threads must be "worthy" before posting. THANK YOU.

Maybe I should look up 'potter' threads to take a cue on what worthy threads look like.

Again, my deepest thanks.

I agree.
I used to carry a .38 when I lived in Miami, actually had to pull it out on 2 different guys, 2 different occasions.

With all due respect you're being a nit-picking idiot. Re-read the article. It says "Women" need to get guns, "women" should walk in groups and purchase guns, etc. It doesn't say "some women", it simply says women. That says to me that it's probably a safe inference he means all women should carry.

But relax your bad self, I actually support the notion that women be allowed to do something proactive to afford themselves some measure of protection. Anyone paying even remote attention to the news for any length of time knows there are a lot of abusers, molesters, and would-be rapists out there, many of them getting away with that and a lot more. I'd actually like nothing better than to hear about a few of them getting their nuts blown off by their target victim packing heat.

... as long as there are training and gun safety requirements and mandatory courses in place. I'm certainly not advocating that just anyone should be able to walk in off the street and buy a gun and be allowed to carry. That would be stupid. My apologies if my evil thread title gave off that impression.

No, a car is a useful item that is usually used several times a week. It is a transportation machine. A gun is not useful on a daily basis. It's a 'just in case' item. It's also meant to kill people. a car's first purpose is not to kill people.

Interestingly enough, I use guns 5 to 7 days a week and have yet to kill anybody.

Maybe I'm just a bad shot. :disgust

I think the word she is looking for is deterrent? The one day you don't have it, is the day you need it.

Aaron, as you get older, think magnesium shot in a shotgun!

CDSmith 11-04-2011 02:59 PM

Aaron, you've never killed anything? :D

I had a racoon problem in my neighborhood a few years back, could have used you. Come to think of it there are a few crows here that could stand a visit.

So if you've never killed anything with your firearms, and you're not practicing, what would you call the activity you are doing with it so many times a week?

I said I've never killed anybody, not anything.

What would I call the activity? "Business" and "pleasure" some of which includes practice.

Would you say a bow is also not a useful daily item and is meant to kill people? How about a switchblade? Nunchucks?

I could fuck your world up with a cheese grater....Or, I could just use it for grating cheese. It's a tool and how a person decides to use said tool is all that matters. Same with guns although obviously more people will use a firearm over a cheese grater if they decide to kill somebody.

How many people were killed at this webmaster event? http://fubarwebmasters.com/galleries.php?id=1312

Yes, a gun is a tool. But what happens when you use a gun properly is much different from what happens if you use a cheese grater for its main purpose. A hammer is a useful tool, but I don't see many people who feel the need to carry one on their person everywhere they go.

So again, assuming you used the guns by your definition of "properly", how many people did you kill?

Or did you use the guns improperly?

I'm not a fan of "under the pillow" at all, but are you not "paranoid" enough to have a smoke alarm? Most likely you'll never NEED your smoke alarm, but when you need it you really need it. Also for me at least knowing that I have three properly working smoke alarms in the house gives me peace of mind - just in case. It's the same with my pistol. I'll probably not need it any time soon, but I like knowing that I can protect my family, just in case.

I did have one occurence so far when several thugs were trying to break in the house. One got his head in and found himself starting down the twin barrels of a shotgun. They all left pretty quick. Aside from that one occurence where I actually had to present a weapon, there have been a few instances where someone acted like they MIGHT have committed an assault until I told them to back off in such a way that it was clear that they had better do so. In one case the drink perpretrator had a knife and was coming after my brother. Knowing that I sometimes carry a pistol, they settled down when I commanded them to do so. I don't know how those would have turned out had I been unarmed.

What stood out about this thread was the common thought that someone doesn't want to own a gun because they don't want to "live that way".

Never forget, you can live in the best neighborhood, never go to a "bad area", but you may run into someone who decided to come to your "good neighborhood" to do harm to some "good people" he saw as an "easy target". Is it likely? No. If it happens, and you can't meet his level of force, that three to thirty minute wait for the police to arrive - if you can access a phone - is going to be an eternity. If you ever run into that person, having a firearm will be "the only way you can live".

I don't have a child so I can't speak on having a gun or not if there is a child. The numbers, from what I have read, show that a firearm successfully defends a family in a number which is a high multiple of the times it would accidentally harm one. When the firearm did accidentally harm someone, it was usually due to gross ridiculous negligence.

Sure- people can argue- no guns, no gun violence. Like it or not, living in the states, people have guns. Not as many as foreigners see on television. They tend to think that 99% of us are firearm owners and walking around shooting things like they see in westerns. Not true - AT ALL.

What also is not true is that gun control can help reduce crime in America. The guns are here. The people who want them have and always will have access to them. The bad people who know YOU don't have one WILL target YOU.

Every city with restrictive firearm laws have caused HUGE gun violence rates. Go read about Washington DC.

If you take the ignorance and emotion based thinking out of it, here in the states, good people owning firearms by and large will reduce crime. Period. Gun control advocates are guilty of causing innocent people to die in the states. Period.

Still don't believe me? Okay- let's outlaw firearms, tomorrow. Or restrict the hell out of them. Tomorrow. Make huge sweeping gun control laws. Blam.

What happened when they tried that with alcohol? With drugs?

Get the picture?

Outlaw them, control them more, create a bigger street market and more incentive to import them and what happens?

Anyone with a brain cell that can talk with one single other one SHOULD realize that gun control in America is pretty stupid.

Outside of limiting CRIMINALS or MENTALLY ILL people from owning them, gun control is an evil feel good but harm causing farce. Period.

And then you have the historical disarment of societies and what governments have always immediately done after.. if that wasn't enough to get through to you. We still have some illusion of freedom in the states, sort of, kind of. Firearm ownership is our last hope in some ways. At least some of us have SOME tiny little form of resistance left. Kind of.

MrMaxwell 11-06-2011 04:34 AM

It's up to every woman to know if she's going to be able to pull on and use one. If you are likely to freeze and the attacker could end up using it on you, don't carry one. If you are not willing to accept the potential liability of misusing one, don't carry one. But don't ever tell any other person THEY can't defend THEMSELVES.. People who dissuade other good people from being protected are responsible for a lot of innocent people being defenseless. At least if you have one, you've got a chance... And yeah, women with guns ARE hot.. women who can fight ARE hot..

MrMaxwell 11-06-2011 04:37 AM

Let's see any gun control nut put this up in his yard and show me a picture. I've never seen it. Unless you live in a very very exclusvie area with its own security force. Then, maybe.. you would..
