Start by telling him you love him and that will never change. Then stand by him throughout life and prove those words to be true. It may very well be a powerful shock and a incredibly emotional period for you. However, remember that he has had this within him for likely a long time. He has had to come to terms with it enough to tell you. That is courage that needs to be acknowledged.

One thing to avoid, perhaps, is identifying him too much by his sexuality, either positively or negatively. I think being too "supportive" of your gay son could be almost as damaging as being real negative about your gay son. Instead, just talk to your son, not your "gay son".

He may being hanging out with people, reading literature, etc. that really focuses on "the gay lifestyle", "gay issues", etc., which separates a person from the rest of society by focusing on, and even inventing, differences. It isn't specific to being gay (sort of hate the word 'choice' in association with sexuality but okay) but in this case, I meant that when parents say that sort of thing to a child that has come out that they then need to back it up and be the supportive parent they need. Certainly that is not exclusive to being the parents of an LGBT child but it the insecurity that often comes with the coming out period is something that does indeed involve the need for a different set of parenting skills.
