It doesn't matter really, since in the end, the answer to EVERYTHING is.....

42.

I was taught bodmas in the sense that anything in brackets was done that way, but that without those brackets, bodmas didn't enter into it. Which is obviously what a bunch of us were taught also, hence us looking like cunts :D

So your question, you would have to arrange (7 + 5) x 2, else it's always gonna be 17. Apparently.

Yeah, I had written it wrong, in my head it was correct. I'm pretty sure people don't imagine brackets when they think of how many is 7 plus 5 then multiplied by 2.

man some boneheads here. Math has rules and they are easy.

mOrrI 11-09-2011 10:38 AM

41... and if u are not sure simply use google to do it!

rajs41 11-09-2011 10:48 AM

40 + 40 x 0 + 1= ?

it's 40+ (40x0) +1 = 40+0+1=41
very simple

Mike Dutch 11-09-2011 10:55 AM

It depends who asks me

PPS on sponsors
40+40 = 80 x (0+1) = 80

Conversion ration
40 + 40x0 + 1 = 1:1

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh

and when it comes to finally paying the result is 0 in many cases :Oh crap

Lol yeah

Hey bro we do 40 + 40 x 0 + 1 overall

80 PPS
1:1 Conversions
0 payout

Works always , this is the magic formula!:1orglaugh

All we have really learned is that there are a lot of people on GFY who don't know basic math and that Frank is some kind of genius.

The answer is either 1, 41 or 81. I dont need to know anymore than that. lols

grumpy 11-09-2011 12:20 PM

a lot of people here should never ever complain about ratios again. If they do, sponsors should pull this thread.

I dont remember much from school, but i remember order of operations very good, and how if you wanted to calculate differently you need to use brackets.

Poindexterity 11-09-2011 01:16 PM

most of yall are some GIANT intellectual pussies.
NO ONE EVER DIED from admitting to being wrong. here, watch. I'll go first.

when i first looked at the title, i of course thought the answer was 1.
but then when someone came in and explained the actual order things go in with math, i realized the mistake i had made and now i see that the answer is 41.

see?
i was wrong.
i admitted it.
I STILL DRAW BREATH.

fuckers.

A cautionary tale for anyone that didn't say 41 ...

A friend's sister was lucky enough to win a big screen TV in a contest a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if it's just Canada, but here you have to answer a skill-testing question to win a prize, just a simple little math question anyone could answer, but it's a legal technicality that means you got the prize by using skill to earn it. The question she had to answer was something along these lines, with a "+" and a "x", and she didn't use order of operations, answered it WRONG and didn't get her prize.

So if you didn't answer 41, please brush up on your grade 6 math or you never know what you might miss out on !!!

helterskelter808 11-09-2011 01:57 PM

I forwarded this thread to CERN. They told me the answer is actually: who really gives a single fuck.

Got another mate, same age as me, who is a maths teacher for 11 - 18 year olds, gonna ask him wtf is going on with this apparent teaching failure.

(turns out I have 2 mates who teach maths)

Teacher #1: got taught it in school, teaches it

Teacher #2: didn't get taught it in school, teaches it

So fuck knows why some were and some weren't :1orglaugh

40 + 40 x 0 + 1= an ambiguous equation

40 +(40 x 0) + 1 = 41
(40+40) x 0 + 1 = 1
40 + 40 x (0 + 1) = 80

Why is that? I have to be honest, it is an equation (theory) that I do not recall ever having to use in real life.

No, it's not ambigious. That's the whole point of the order of operations rules.

We use brackets when they're needed. In this case they are not needed. How do you know brackets are done first? Because they're covered in the order of operations. This stuff is taught every day to middle school children in this century. If you don't want to believe me that's fine, but you're just being silly. There's nothing ambigious about this equation.

MaDalton 11-09-2011 08:29 PM

it's not about "fashion" or when was done what...

with or without brackets it simply makes it two different equations

I know because I have a degree in mechanical engineering. I took math classes for 9 semesters. Every freshmen gets that order of operations gag from a professor with a sense of humor. Turn in a paper with an equation written without proper brackets and you fail. There is a reason we have been using brackets for the last 400 years.
