Spam happens anyway, with or without pm's. In topics, emails in sigs and icq. Pm spam can be stopped by disabling pm's in your profile or blocking users. Same as the public part of the forum or profile comments, no difference. As long as nobody can mass pm, spamming wouldn't even be a minor issue. And if you limited the feature to just green nicks and up, it would be even less of an issue. The spam excuse makes no sense. The resources excuse actually makes sense, but is a shame since more active boards than this have no resource issues 'cause they upgrade hosting when needed. IMO.
