I worked on a garbage truck a few summers as a student, and the pickers here mostly were at the dump. People would look down on them, but they're people too. Most have it rough, they don't need people to make it worse for them.

Honestly, if you're worried about the guy go out and talk to him. Tell him you're proud of him recycling and would like to help, asking what he's looking for so you can have it put aside in the future and make it easier for him to pick up so he doesn't have to rummage though your stuff cause you believe in recycling and want to help someone who's doing such a good thing for the environment! Basically - befriend him and get him to tell you what he's up to.

hm... what I have learned from this thread is that in the US it's normal people search through your trash... wtf, sounds like a 3rd world country already....

People make awesome tax free livings doing that. He probably has a booth at a flea market/swap meet and makes a killing. All under the radar. One person's trash is another person's treasure. :D

Why would anyone get defensive about their garbage? Wouldn't that say more about you than the person collecting it? I have a guy who comes around on a bike every now and then and takes cans, milk jugs out of my recycling--I don't care, why should you?

i don't know what its like in all areas but where i live you can easily pick up stuff worth a few hundred dollars just driving down the road on garbage day. people throw out so much. computers, tvs, dressers, etc all in good shape.

I now have to get up early and put it out because my girl can't stand the people going through it.

We live in the city and there's a TON of it. We bought a new couch a few months back and put the old one out on the street. It wasn't out there an hour before someone had it stripped apart and all the metal out of it.

Another time I put out the old hot water heater AND and old washing machine. A husband and wife team managed to get BOTH of them into the VW JETTA of all things.

print out a sign that says please no salvaging my trash. see if he respects that. don't get violent it will never end right if you do.

aha, that's the difference.. here you cant put anything on the street or you get fined. Only garbage bags in containers get picked up. You have to bring devices, couches etc yourself to the dump, recycle stores, sell it or whatever.

The bottom line is if your garbage has value, someone will "monetize" it. Now, if only amateurs would stop giving away free garbage. It makes it very hard to be a professional waste producer. :1orglaugh:winkwink:

Actually, more like the opposite. People here have so much access to so much stuff that they through away perfectly good, valuable things all the time. Some people take advantage of that, and make some good money.

What's your problem with me dude? I always have a winner except 1 time when I was advised to stop the thread. Not everyone contacts me to claim the prize however. But there is no statute of limitations on that.

I followed the guy got his tag number saw him and I am guessing his wife digging thru someone elses garbage, His truck bed was full of pickings so I am assuming he's not trying to steal documents, just trying to pick up stuff to salvage.

Like many have commented in a area like where i live the gas he uses prolly eats up his profits. It sounds rough and out of tune so his gas bill has to be terrible.

seriously i put stuff out and hope someone takes it and uses it its TRASH, you threw it away... the last thing id let bother me in this world is someone bad off enough to be digging through trash... i put out a ton of stuff thats perfectly fine and put free on it and its gone in hours.

That's my take on things too. Can't seem to convince my girl otherwise.

Our 93 year old neighbor passed away right before Christmas. She was a hoarder. There's a TON of interesting shit coming out of her house and into the garbage. I can pretty much go out there at any time and there's someone picking through the pile they make each week.
