What is it about?

Ayla_SquareTurtle 01-19-2012 02:33 PM

Looks like they got them because some MU files were being served off servers in the US. If they'd have served them all from overseas servers they'd still be sipping margs on a New Zealand beach somewhere.

VenusBlogger 01-19-2012 02:35 PM

Just one day after the Massive SOPA and PIPA Blackout.

Obviously this is not about piracy. Can't believe some people here can't see the real message. Come on, guys, you are smart and are internet professionals with years of experience. Think a bit about it. Don't look just 1 yard in front of you. Look further.

According to the indictment Kim made 42M from it in 2011... which suggests they pin total revenue even higher than that amount. Figure how much tax money is being lost... and how much more tax revenue would be generated if the site didn't exist and copyright holders were monetizing their content. Piracy costs governments more money than it costs private companies and governments are very short on cash at the moment.

2012 may seem like the year of the M. In fact, it will be the year of the G as Governments start going after every dollar they can get their hands on...

I suggest Gygtymer and Gailed... ;)

Governments only have 3 ways to pay for things:

1) Raise Revenue = higher taxes
2) Cut Spending = less services
3) Collect More Efficiently = Get Reelected

The first two options have strong risks of getting them voted out by one side or the other. The third option has NO risk for elected officials. Nobody bitches when a tax cheat gets busted or off shore accounts get taken etc... I'd expect the government to collect a much higher percentage of the total potential revenue available to them in 2012-2013, rather than raise taxes or cut services too sharply. The Buffet rule is a good example of their attempt to do so, and even GWB was out in front on the issue closing off shore account loopholes.

States already do it with increases in traffic tickets. Not new laws or new fines, just higher enforcement of the existing ones. There are laws on the books to deal with piracy... they aren't enforced with nearly the impact they could be. SOPA and PIPA aren't needed to go after pirates if the government makes it a priority... and the timing of these arrests is likely designed to make that point. :2 cents:

Four of the seven people, including the site?s founder Kim Dotcom, born Kim Schmitz, have been arrested in New Zealand, the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Thursday; the three others remain at large. The seven ? who a grand jury indictment calls part of a ?Mega Conspiracy? ? have been charged with five counts of copyright infringement and conspiracy, the authorities said. ...

I hear they are tough on crime in New Zealand. He might have to go to a jail for a few weeks where they only have HBO, not even showtime or cinemax.

Indeed. Go back and read many of my posts in the SOPA threads, I've been saying for a while that CURRENT law already gives them the right to shut sites down for piracy. They can shut down site after site with or without SOPA, and this is a fine example of that.

nikki99 01-19-2012 03:17 PM

Did you notice that megaupload had content hosted in America?
That made a difference.

SOPA only deals with sites not hosted in America.

So you don't really make the point you were aiming for.

They should have acquired some office space in Russia or Ukraine (like Manwin).

There are certainly other ways to handle the situation.

Manwin has offices in Germany - so they are clearly not afraid.

Agree;)

Moreover US=CA=UK=NZ=AU in that case of this thread (and many others). Nothing unusual.
