Indeed. Go back and read many of my posts in the SOPA threads, I've been saying for a while that CURRENT law already gives them the right to shut sites down for piracy. They can shut down site after site with or without SOPA, and this is a fine example of that.

nikki99 01-19-2012 03:17 PM

go SOPA!

Good news, I'm off to bed with a smile on my face. :)

And they did this without SOPA or PIPA ...

Did you notice that megaupload had content hosted in America?
That made a difference.

SOPA only deals with sites not hosted in America.

So you don't really make the point you were aiming for.

Can you imagine that the U.S. just snaps its fingers and most other countries deliver these "criminals" (one being a graphic artist for megaupload) on a platter?

What the fuck?

They should have acquired some office space in Russia or Ukraine (like Manwin).

alextokyo 01-19-2012 03:31 PM

Filesonic, Rapidshare, and Fileserve are shitting their pants right about now. :1orglaugh

There are certainly other ways to handle the situation.

Just ask this guy :

the kino.to guys were in germany and spain and are in jail now too - including their designer

Manwin has offices in Germany - so they are clearly not afraid.

Agree;)

Moreover US=CA=UK=NZ=AU in that case of this thread (and many others). Nothing unusual.

Thank god we have SOPA/PIPA because otherwise this crook would never have been taken down.

Oh...hang on a minute...

Cystomatic 01-19-2012 03:45 PM

Megaupload was just the first, more to come.

Fileserve, Filesonic, Oron, HotFile, Rapidshare and a ton more.

that would suck if the real owners of filesonic were revealed. they were supposed to do a keynote next year.

I appear now the other sites will be more mindful of acting on DMCA notices and not actively encouraging stolen material. Youtube has added some good features for producers to allow their content to be on the site in exchange for a share of the ad revenue. Perhaps some other sites will do the same - working legally with the people who invested in producing the material.

I don't see that happening now, but who ever buys them might show up.

Doubtful.

There are many tubes I see in a 5 minute search who offer 'incentives' to their members to upload content. While I am not going to say they proactive know it's all stolen or what not (as there is an exception to every rule). Looking at most profiles you can see that the content is mismatched and watermarked from a ton of different companies.

Most who I doubt would knowingly allow full length anything uploaded.

:2 cents:

But what of it?
There is no such thing as extra-territorial jurisdiction.
US laws stop at US borders.

SOPA could not seize servers that are not on US soil.
SOPA could not affect advertising networks that are not on US soil.
Look at Internet gambling as an example of making it illegal for VISA and other US companies to process their payments -- they are still in business aren't they?

Wow, I bet they have millions stashed away though.

Why 01-19-2012 04:36 PM

pretty crappy the US is able to shutter someones business without any due process.

due process IS due process and should never be sacrificed... for that would make us like Iran, China & N. Korea.

I'm asking myself the same thing.

Maybe he was put in there as an informer or something, the guy is in the music industry and his wife is Alicia Keys so this shutdown benefits him and the people he mingles with the most.

Read the indictment http://www.scribd.com/doc/78786408/Mega-Indictment

They were charged under the RICO statute -- organized crime and racketeering for criminal copyright infringement.

Let's see how the Defendants answer the charges at trial ... They are looking at as much as 55 years at Fed-Med.

See the Third Party Defendants whose property is being seized p. 18 - 20
