It is always darkest before the dawn and it has been pretty fucken dark lately.

No doubt there WILL be more prosecutions. Do you want to have your ass hanging in the wind if you are on the list of big pirate sites?

AdultKing 01-19-2012 05:17 PM

This is good news. The more of these thieves they shut down the better.

They were charged under the RICO statute -- organized crime and racketeering for criminal copyright infringement.

Let's see how the Defendants answer the charges at trial ... They are looking at as much as 55 years at Fed-Med.

See the Third Party Defendants whose property is being seized p. 18 - 20

they're fucked. the feds dont lose RICO cases.

Mega is probably guilty as fuck but they shuttered someones business a year ago that was cleared of all charges. After the government stalled the court case, never gave them the info that was legally requested, refused to drop the shit and put them out of business. :thumbsup

As BF would say, they are all strangers to me. :)

I believe if they all went down tomorrow my profits would skyrocket as conversions would tighten big time across all affil programs.

SE traffic would go up big time.

But they are here. No probs with legal tubes.

I doubt tubes will get touched at all. They want these multi-file sharing sites/forums that also share all TV, movies ect.

Over 25million recent links now useless, 300Million historical links wiped out.

This will annoy the fuck out of all the sites linking to the site too, which is a good thing. There are heaps of forums and sites dedicated to Megaupload links... I hope they suffer too.

Anti-piracy crusaders, like 99.9% of everyone else, do not give a single fuck about pornographers. And yet morons here actually seem to think this is about them in some way.

Though to be fair, some morons are just cheering because they were jealous of MU's success.

Vjo 01-19-2012 05:50 PM

But my point was, let's say you own one of the sites that is on the "list". You are in the US, Canada*, Great Britain* or US friendly countries.

You made your money. Do you want to dangle that site in front of the DOJ with your name attached. Give up all your money when it is seized? All your property when it is confiscated? Do hard time?

When more prosecutions come down I would not be surprised to see some file sharing sites fold.

* Thought I would draw the Canooks and Brits in. :) Jurisdiction may not be there with the US but I would not be so sure. And I still would take my butt off the chopping block.

This is true. Lots of shit will no longer sell but the stuff that marginally sells will sell better. It won't sell worse.

So win some lose some. Pirates had their day. It is ending very tragicly for some of the Long John Silvers.

DOJ doesnt fuck around and these guys will lose all assets to pay restitution and will get hard time to set an example.

Maybe they're idiots, or maybe, like 'legit' billionaires, the money is just a byproduct of them doing what they like doing. Either way filesharing sites will not stop, especially when they not in and of themselves illegal or criminal.

Edit: And good luck giving 50 years to someone from a country that does not bend over and take it from Uncle Sam, the way US satellite states like NZ or the UK do.

But what of it?
There is no such thing as extra-territorial jurisdiction.
US laws stop at US borders.

SOPA could not seize servers that are not on US soil.
SOPA could not affect advertising networks that are not on US soil.
Look at Internet gambling as an example of making it illegal for VISA and other US companies to process their payments -- they are still in business aren't they?

Right, that's why SOPA wanted to cut off the DNS which is in America.

Living in the US and having sites on the net is super transparent.

Plus who knows, obviously they have copies of the site long ahead plus all the rest so maybe it's too late to pull the plug. But you show the judge good faith when you realized something might be a tad illegal.

Better advice: Get a good suitcase and take a slow boat to China.

The mistake is to assume that if you take out a file sharing site you're going to stop people sharing files. It simply will not make a difference to piracy. But that's beside the point anyway; it's quite obvious that a lot of people cheering about this were simply jealous of the money made by the people running MU.

I'm wondering if MU was shut down less because of Megaupload, which is AFAIK is no different to many other fileshare sites, and more because of Megavideo. I personally never ever used MU but used MV frequently.

Your right about the organized crime, a lot of major drug dealers do it not just for the money but also because it's what they do best and some of them don't really know how to live a life without crime. They like everything that comes along with the money (well except for the getting caught part, but even then most accept it and just consider it a part of the game).

Very very true, but nonetheless, companies with similar business models have to be calculating 'maybe they aren't, and if they aren't....' etc. The years they could be waiting for the judgement to come down on MU, continuing "business as usual" are years that can/will be used against them if MU is found guilty. Think back to the early 2257 busts. It's the same thing - a "get your shit together" message.

Like I said - I agree that this doesn't stop piracy, but it is still a message to sites that enable piracy. And that can make a difference. Jealousy? Yeah maybe we all are envious of the fast and easy money they made. Same as with drug lords and such....until you get to the jail part :1orglaugh
