When someone is rushing at you (or your partner) with a weapon, they don't automatically drop instantly just because they have a small hole in them.
Very rarely, a bullet might severe the spinal cord or certain parts of the brain and in that case they'll drop, but in the vast majority of cases pepper spray works a lot quicker than a 9mm round does. A pistol bullet is only about as big around as a ball point pen. Consider if someone jabs a pen into your leg. Do you really think that even all hopped on on drugs your leg would instantly become completely useless because it had a pen sized hole in it? Not likely. After you bleed for thirty minutes, sure you'll be down then.

I do remember only a few cases of fatal shooting against unarmed (the one w/o firearms in their hands) people. All these cases were resulted into a prison time for the police officers (the last one I know was resulted in a life sentence in the Black Dolphin prison).

I don't necessarily disagree. My post was about ballistics, not policy. Another try with the taser and some pepper spray might have been appropriate. On the other hand, "being struck with a metal object", the crowbar, might easily have resulted in the cop being blind the rest of his life, maybe killed, whatever, so I'm not too terribly upset that the aggressor was taken out before he did real damage to anyone. I'm not making a statement about that.

My point is that although another try with the taser might be appropriate or other tactics might be appropriate, going for a Hollywood non-lethal shot to a moving joint is never the right move. The odds against making that shot to drop him instantly without killing him are about 50,000 to 1. Maybe the cop could have jumped on the bad guy from behind, whatever. Trying to hit the one inch area of his knee that counts, while he's rushing another officer, would have been dumb . Nobody trained with firearms would ever try it. That kind of bullseye is quite rare on a suspect sitting still holding a hostage being shot by a sniper with a rifle and high powered scope. With a pistol and moving target - only in the movies.

I come from the school of thought that when cops shoot, they shoot to kill... not to slow you down. And if you lunge at the police, they've got guns, and they have waited their entire fucking life to use them on someone... and they will take that opportunity when it presents itself. It's not necessarily about safety...
