The most hideous crimes in the history of mankind have been committed by people who thought they were doing the right thing. They either had good intentions and believed they were doing what they were supposed to be doing or they used those 'good intentions' as an excuse to justify their actions.
I admit that religions have been used in this way. As a way to justify certain actions, as a way to get people to join in and commit crimes, as a way to silence opposition,...
But just like wet sidewalks don't cause rain, it would be a logical fallacy to automatically conclude that religions cause harm. We see the same kind of behavior that we despise/fear in certain religious groups in other groups like environmentalists, scientific utopians, statists of all varieties,.... Even the so called Rally for Sanity was a good example of sheeplike behavior.
Like I said, I'm not religious. I don't believe in God or any gods. But I don't care what my neighbor believes in. If my neighbor wants to worship a piece of toast because he thinks he can see the face of Jehova in it if he holds it under a blacklight that's fine by me. If my other neighbor wants to dress in pink every day because that's part of his religion, that's fine by me. If the lady across the street wants to spend all her time reading a 2000 year old book over and over again, that's fine by me.
Their body, their property, their decision. As long as they don't cause damage to me or my property, I don't care what they do. I believe that's called tolerance.
