people get control of those pages, throw dating banners on them or whatever then spam backlinks to it. it's easier to rank due to trust, age and so on.

The GeoCities page I saw actually had no content relevant to my search and was simply a Yahoo notice that GeoCities was shut down. If Google is ranking that page giving significant emphasis to age and backlinks without a shred of useful content, then their algorithm is seriously flawed, open to manipulation and the reason for an awful web surfing experience.
