Since you live in a place where it is allowed and it sounds like others do the same thing it is certainly a different type of a situation than where I live. Where I live it is a small rural town, but they are pretty strict about pet laws. Normally I wouldn't have a problem if someones dog or cat wondered through my yard occasionally, in my case the cat just seemed to love my house.

I guess what I am saying is that if you can you should try to keep an eye on him. While he may be doing nothing to really bother people there is also the chance that he is walking on someones car or shitting in their yard/flowers and they just aren't saying anything about it. Instead they are just stewing and getting madder and madder and one day he might just disappear.

Hopefully that never happens, but if it were me, I would try to keep an eye on him from time to time and see where he goes and I would even talk to the neighbors to make sure everything is cool. Better to be a little safe and proactive than sorry.

Buddy about 7:30 wanted to go out. Started doing that cat whining. So on goes the collar, and open goes the cat door. He wanders out and wanders back in about 45 mins and now has no desire to go out.

As I suspected, he has it all under control.

If a couple people in the neighborhood (very few) would chill a bit they would find that he causes no probs. And if there is a prob, we work it out by scaring Buddy out of there or whatever we have to do.

But fact is he does like to stay with me and the good news is we are very tight and he knows where home is.

Id also like to thank the voters who have put the poll where it should be. I apologize for writing so much but the outdoor screaming match yesterday got me worked up.

Vjo, I had sympathy for you when your last cat got attacked by a bigger animal and died. I had sympathy for you when your current cat went missing for several days. I'm a cat lover but why did you start this poll if you're determined to let this cat to be subjected to being killed or getting diseases that you may or may not be able to afford the vet bills for?

You call everyone a hater for telling you to keep your cat inside. Do you want this cat to die too?

My cat, who I love dearly, stays inside all of the time and has no desire to go outside. He also has all of his shots just in case. Every animal that your cat encounters potentially has rabies or other diseases. Does your cat have all of his shots?

I don't know why I'm even bothering. It's just that I love my cat. Do whatever the fuck you want with yours. You'd probably be better off just feeding the strays though.

1) He was a farm cat for the first 6 months of his life.
2) He has already been out prob 50 times.
3) Now that he has a cat door and perch he wont venture far and that will become his focal point. He will eventually spend 98% of his time in the lawn chairs right outside the door completely safe.
4) He wants to go out. I will keep him in as much as poss but like the voters I do not believe with 1/4 acre, many trees, friendly neighbors on 3 sides (actually 4 as the hater on one side wont hurt him, hell just bitch if anything)

He will SOON have all his shots in within two weeks incl FLV. He has had rabies and distemper. Lucky died of FLV and not from a bigger cat. He was too old and FLV had set in after he got bit.

So his system became infected fast. Nurse said normal cat could have handled the bite he got. He even sat in the lawn chair for 6 hours beofre coming in after getting bit. I had no idea he got bit or exactly when it happened. Unfortunately there was not FLV vac back in his day.

Yes outdoor cats in their life will prob get bit by other cats. With FLV vac he will be fine. To HIM and all my cats it is (was) worth it by far for his (their) freedom.

And yeah he would have ran either way like all my cats for almost 30 years. By ran.. the freedom to run but cats seldom go far once they have a cat door and perch as they always want to be close to that.

THAT is the secret. You can not lock them out which was my mistake the first time and why he got lost OR got tired of coming around. I did not show him the cat door previously which was my biggest mistake last 2 months.

I was taking the advice to keep him in and all that did was cause probs like him getting lost.

I will do all I can but yes Buddy will get a lil air. He will learn the ropes and wont go far. It was good I was able to train him in the winter.

Is it ethicly better to give 3 cats a shot at life and all run (chances are only one as he will live fine all his life) OR better to make captive ONE cat so he surely lives but never really lives as a cat should.

Never sits outside. Never runs on my lot. Never goes out with me at 4 am. (as we just did as I cont to train him on the cat door from all angles)

You have to let him be who he is.. a cat.. not your indoor captive that is there cause YOU cant handle death.. not him. Cats are wired to be free.. at least somewhat.

Lucky lived life how he wanted for 12 1/2 years. Had he had FLV vac he would have no doubt went longer. I feel good I did what was right by Lucky.

Had he spent his entire life inside I would have been unfair to him espec since he ran outdoors for at least 6 months (as did Buddy also 6 months altho prob about 3 actual running) before he came to me.

Lucky's focus was me and the home as is Buddys. That will always keep him safe.

Buddy is going back to private life now. No more on Buddy :) Thanks to all who helped me through this trilogy of Buddy threads. :) Think it was educational so a good set of threads.

Plus he is so damn cute I couldnt resist. :)
