I bet you are a young guy :) Kudos man. The "entire list" IS the cool answer :thumbsup :)

Basicly none of that stuff will kill ya.

Not to argue but here most stuff does not contain msg. A few things but only processed stuff. I'm sure a few folks never read lables.

The other day Doritos was the free item if you buy $30. I am sitting looking at every variety of Doritos. ALL 10+ varieties contain MSG but they look great. Buffalo blue cheese, all these great flavors.

Suddenly a kid about 19 comes along. Mom says, "what do you want" kid grabs one in two seconds. Lots of people dont care about MSG.

BTW they tasted great but I threw them after a few. I know should have donated them but my money :) and I wanted to see if I could handle a little. Had only a few chips so they only fucked me up a little but I did take a nap after eating as always. They had BIG flavor tho. BIG flavor.

1) I agree with you here and this is my basic strategy and thus I want to see what you all think is healthy (or not)

2) Well that is true I guess. Cant really argue and good point. But I also have to do all the other stuff in life so altho I am lazy today Mon-Wed I was working all day on stuff. You have to save time when as Alice said, "I'm still on my own"

3) Naah I am 6'3" 308 so one beer does nothing. It just seemed like what I wanted at the time for taste. In the kitchen I go on auto pilot when hungry.. bad I know. One Aspirin is just cause I like to keep the blood thinned. No doze is no diff than coffee without all the riggamarole and more efficient and cheaper.

Good info on the oats. So steel cut is not the same as cheap whole oats? Both are pretty cheap I guess.

I once asked the health guys here this and they said any whole oats is good.

she struts into the room
well i dont know her

told her that I came from Detroit City

cause it's a long long way to paradise
and im still on my own

sorry, I need my music when posting :)

Steel cut should be the same as "whole" oats. Just don't buy the instant quaker packs is what I'm trying to say :)

MSG - in North America they can hide MSG by saying "spices" or "flavouring" in the ingredient list. http://www.rense.com/general52/msg.htm

Margarine/balance/whatever - liquid plastic. I would avoid it. Use olive oil or butter in moderation. Avoid the chemicals.

Not to sound like a nag, but will power is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. If you say no to the free Doritos, it will be easier to say no to the candy later. Then easier to say no to the chips again, say no to the afternoon beer, etc. YOu get the idea :)

Good luck with making your changes! It's tough, but oh so worth it!

Maybe you people should import your food from a different country that doesn't pump its livestock full of steroids, anti-biotics, and other chemicals.

Most of the food on your list isn't actually bad for you - unless you eat buckets of it each day. I'm tempted to go through your blue titled items and tell you how to prepare them - but I'm lazy.

The corn syrup, though - avoid that at all costs. When I was a kid, cor syrup was a premium item - even more rare than Maple Syrup in Canada. Now its in every fucking bit of box-food you buy.

"Box food" is anything that comes in a box, can, or bag. Don't ever eat any that of shit.

garce 05-31-2012 08:28 PM

BTW - make your own mayonaise. It takes ten minutes. Just don't ever eat that shit - or anything else - out of a jar with label attached to it.

Its really not that hard to stop buying packaged crap.

Adam_M 05-31-2012 08:38 PM

Very opinionated poll!

Most of the foods on that list are only bad for you if eaten in excess. I like to stay away from processed foods in general opting for fresh whole foods with a good mix of everything.

Vjo 05-31-2012 08:51 PM

one more, girls, food, same thing :)

"you people" LOL Hey buddy :) No you are right. Most are only bad in quantity. I am a binger. Havant eaten yet since about 4 hours ago. Boards get me off so I dont have to eat even tho I am hungry. Weight loss secret ;)

You can tell me how to prepare them. MSG, Nitrites, white flour, pasta, corn chips :) The meats I can do :) Lot of meat eaters on GFY (posters). Not too many vegetarians which makes sense I guess.

Yeah folks really avoiding corn syrup. Only a few candy bars dont have any. One is (which I have a few fun sized bars around )..

only dark choc, sugar and coconut. Made by Hersheys and the only good bar Hershey has anymore

http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/mounds.jpg

need a sammie soon ...

http://www.sqvirtual.com/img/eastcoastsloppyjoe1.jpg

I know nitrites. :)

Mine will be:
2 oz top sirloin
mayo, YES I crave it suddenly only 2 TB.. 1 TB per slice bread
vidalea onions a couple slices
more chedder, sliced, another oz (all I got :) )
prob just water, need to save a beer for later, had one
two pieces basic Holsum Split Butter Wheat
A lil dijon

That's all. Very good eating :) Prob about 600 cals. Not bad :) And 4 "bad" items :) (beef, mayo, cheese, bread)

bad, bad, bad, bad boy

Vjo 05-31-2012 10:46 PM

add:

another beer (fuck it)
about 250 cals worth of plain chips
a cherry "slice" hehe (I needed sustenance while making the sammie) the demon... corn syrup
two pieces of red licorice (generic like twizzlers but better)

Oh-oh starting to spin out of control.............

damn this is good, extra Mayo hits the spot. feel like shit later maybe but... great now :thumbsup

And I havnt even started to watch TV yet.

Elli 05-31-2012 11:05 PM

A site that I use and have recommended to friends in the past is http://www.myfitnesspal.com. It has free apps for your phones/devices and works really well in helping you become aware of what you take in compared to what you actually need. Eating 600 calories four hours after a meal? That's fine if you go out for a bike ride after... not watch tv :)

Vjo 05-31-2012 11:10 PM

Ok crashing and burning HARD lol NO coming back from that much mayo....

Thanks for voting. Do as I say, not as I do :) or YOU will be the crazy old guy on the chat board someday. Which aint really that bad :)

Gloria Estefan purty purty hot in bad boys...........

gimme drugs.............

so I can go on..............

thanks Elle :thumbsup :thumbsup

Luckily I am big enough so I can handle a few cals and maintain weight. Not lose tho :( But maintain is ok I guess today.

Someday I will rise to challenge corn syrup head on :)

Big enough to maintain weight? What does that even mean? That's the silliest thing I've heard today. Luckily you're so big that a few thousand extra calories won't make you gain? Of course you're gaining!

Like I said, good luck with your challenge. True change starts with a change of heart or mind. Maybe you're not at the point yet where you actually want to change things.

*hugs* and good luck!

Hi Elli, What I mean was being a lil bigger I can have a couple hundred more maintainance cals than a guy 100 LBs lighter. Actually yesterday was a good thing as I only ate what was posted so I was actually under my maintainance cals for the day so posting all day in this thread was worth it :thumbsup

And a good thread as I learned that most of you have given up corn syrup completely so that is good to know.

I get a lil wacked out and stir crazy from being in this thread for almost 48 hours.

I am ready to lose and this thread is part of the process. :)

Hugs to you too and thanks for your kind comments and help. It is/was very much appreciated :thumbsup :)

Today I've had 2 cups of coffee (1 more than usual), a large glass of water, some 0 calorie lemonade, 1 bowl of fried rice with protien and vegetables and garlic and such spices, and 2 cookies.

It's helpful to write down what you eat. Also how many reps of which exersize you do. Sometimes I just literally forget that I just ate something until I look at my notes, hehe.

That sounds like a pretty good effort :thumbsup

Agreed, I think the only way to consistently go in the right direction is to write it down or enter it in Lose It or in a WtWatchers log ect. Otherwise you are all over the place. Gonna see how LoseIt.com works.

I skipped TV last night, fell asleep and was hungry this am. THAT is important. The one thing I do wrong is eat before bed and wake not all that hungry. You have to wake hungry then eat something decent.

Easier said than done. But that really is the most important thing.. NOT eating a lot before bed. ALL my weight gain came from eating before bed.

I know what to do but doing it is sometimes a diff deal :)

Anyhow, good day to all and let today be a good day that takes us in the right direction :)

I had my usual Taco to start the day:

2-3 oz 93% lean ground beef
1 oz chedder
Heavy on the Vidalea onions
Taco sauce
Hard shell

Braggs ACV in water (no cals)

About 500 cals

I'm glad I could help. I apologize for being cranky in my previous post, that was uncalled for. Good for you for sticking to your plan!

For me today so far:
1 pink grapefruit
2 cups coffee
1 piece white bread toast w/ butter
1 small bowl of clam and asparagus linguine (leftover from last night)

I detected no crankiness at all. In fact your post made my day. :) I always think I am coming off like a deush on chatboards lol :) Maybe I do. :)

With no emotion indicators or voice inflection ect it is hard to "say what you mean and mean what you say" (as "they" (Serge the man :) ) says you should do)

Anyhow you're a sweetheart for caring :)

Quick and Easy Calorie Calculator

for me

Maintenance 2785
Fat Loss 2464

So that is quite a bit. Basiclly 2500 cals and I am losing. I CAN do this :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

I fig you are way less :) I need the 500 cals to start the day. LOL Me and fruit.. and I am hungry SOON :)

Time to start counting cals. Gonna see how Lose It works. They might add something the other old school counters like Wt Watchers dont. The Iphone way is best but since I am on the puter a lot the site may work well.

I'll let you all know.

Maybe we need a fat loss thread (or is this it :) ) where those of us can hang. hehe If you confess your sins eh maybe it will be easier to stick with the program and peer support is always good.

I am SURE I am not the only one carrying too much extra weight in this line of work. :)

Vjo 06-01-2012 03:22 PM

Today I begin counting calories.

The last time I counted cals was about 1979. I went from 210 to 190 LOL :) Yeah I was real fat :) Ahh to have the ideals of a young guy about 22 :) Could have about 2000 cals then I think it was.

This changes everything. The first thing that goes through your head is "slices" have to go at 100 cals a pop. Because now I am committed.

Fact I am gonna go throw them out right now AS I have done before. I got honey. I got a few small jubes Ill finish, that should keep from going cold turkey. The last of the red licorice maybe I will keep, maybe I can have 1 a day. See how it goes.

I have thrown stuff before only to buy it again which is really dumb :) but happens. At my size I get HUNGRY sometimes. So start reasonably and dont go cold turkey completely BUT I hate slices. My belly is a "slice" LOLOL.

So after I hit submit THEY are in the garb.

it's 1979

again :)

Excellent to hear! Good for you for starting fresh!

Yes, I'm on a maintenance diet of 1200 calories a day. If I exercise more, I can eat a bit more. This sucks for someone like me who LOVES to cook and loves to eat! But I just need to learn to love to exercise more, I guess... :)

Great song choice, btw.

Thanks a lot. I apprec the info. Glad someone went and dug it up :)

Yeah I hear ya. They say basicly two eggs / day for healthy person BUT then you must also limit cheese, fatty meat ect. SO cholesterol IS for real.

I hear ya man. Fact is my best friend has been telling me I need to lose. And frankly at 55 I know that seriously I am heading the wrong way. I am strong and healthy BUT no man can escape time OR flaunt their diet forever OR carry 300+ forever. I am starting to feel it the last couple years.

I was under 300 a couple years back (299) when I had a chest cold and it is amazing what 10 lbs can do. 300 is a def warning point. Ya cant go much over for the avg Joe that is not an athlete.

I see the writing and that is why I must change. Just being 100% honest but it does no good to lie at this point.

Im pretty fucken out of shape man.

A couple guys called me fat when I was delivering pizzas at 255 in 1995 LOL so yeah.. 6'3 helps BUT 308 is 308.

Vjo 06-01-2012 04:32 PM

No more fried eggs :) Hardboiled only. Hot mustard :thumbsup Then one a day maybe or no yolks but as Artie Lange once said "eat the yolk" so.. one a day :)

Hey that is cheaper and easier to do :thumbsup

the road is long
with many a winding turn
that leads us to who
knows where

but I'm strong
strong enough to carry him

so on we go

thanks :)

oh well, it wont be ez, 2500 cals seems like a lot but prob isnt once we get going

But after being fat since about the early 90s it is exciting cause I know it will work and any effort is good.

To everything there is a season. And I hear the roosters crowing. I hear my fellow man's warning.

the long and winding road

that leads to your door

Mustard over mayo is becoming clearer :) altho I have a lil more breathing room. It is the pigging out b4 bed as I say that got me here. Was fun but cost a lot really.

If I take a walk I can have almost 2600 cals maintainance. 2460 is for 100% sedentary. So I will take the walk :)

Hmm that seems like a darn good rule. But that is seriously hardcore fitness. And as Captain H will tell ya .. Im prob not at that level of commitment.

Anyhow you are the first zero and THANKS cause it confirms as I thought that ALL of them are a lil shaky.

If ya get a min tell the folks why the chicken has to go. Seriously. Chicken and Beef are prob the only two I feel are somewhat healthy in the list off the top of my head.

Beef has sat fat but lean doesnt have too much. Chicken.. um is ok I guess if it is fresh.

I didn't realize I said it, but I'm glad it helped! :)

If you're really gung ho or you are the kind of person who likes to see results right away, don't "eat back" your exercise calories. For instance, if you have 2400 calories a day, then walk off 200 of them, only eat 2400 calories that day not 2600. It's not too much harder, and you notice results quicker. That's a key to getting over any plateaus your body will get caught up on.

First rule: don't buy "food" that required a scientist to make it! If your granny couldn't make it at home, don't buy it! It's not very good for you :)

Well I have been meaning to begin but you came along and.. when you said, "WHY do you have this stuff in your house, are you trolling" :) I realized maybe it is time to start. Cause yeah.. ya cant have your cake and eat it to.

So you were the random stranger (I guess you could say) who actually gave a damn and that was the SIGN that this is the time to start :)

GREAT idea! That is very sharp. Those are the kind of tips that help. Good point. REWARD yourself (with more weight loss) for getting your butt in gear.

And the "grandma rule" I already do, due to "budget concerns" LOL So yeah I already cook all main stuff from scratch. Cheapest foods are the best for you (carbs) Veg and protein you have to pay for tho :)

My friend and his wife gave me a huge frozen beef roast when I was out there out of the blue.

Someone up there likes me...

indeed I really do get by

CaptainHowdy was here :)

hmm what song is that. Sounds country western :)

BTW I am already thinking this counting cal thing may be a pain :) Not cause I cant do it just that Im lazy (kidding Elli :) )

Still at 1200 cals for the day. Of course I got a mason jar full of wh*te cross. KIDDING! :) Only no-doze but that kind of helps. Shit I got 2500 cals a day. This is gonna be... cake.

Not literally :( No cake for me :) (LOL you seen that coming down 5th Avenue didnt you LOL :) )

But the poll was stuff I felt is "iffy" and the folks pretty much set the record straight. Go with the masses on stuff like this always works :)
