If someone is against gay marriage, let them say so with the ACTUAL reasons why without using the politcally create phrase "traditional definition of marriage" because it's just so much garbage. It's not a reason, it's a word designed specifically to make discrimination palatable by people who have no genuine reason to back up their position against gay marriage. IMHO.

Let them lay out their fears or concerns in plain english. Like defining a word without using the word in the definition. It falls apart immediately and that's why the phrase was created.

To people in 1900 it was completely normal for women not to vote and be excluded from leadership roles and so forth. History is just packed full of examples and it's just a little empathy or compassion needed to see the other side of it. To a gay person, it's simply about equality and nothing else. They're not asking for anything special, they're asking to not be faced with the intangible yet tangible "no gays allowed" signs placed in front of them by ignorant people who don't know any better.

When blacks were integrated into our armed forces, fully 80% of active duty soldiers said they shouldn't be. It took a strong leader to make the right call despite the ignorant masses who thought otherwise.

Do you have any clue as to how women and black men got the right to vote?

I take the American capitalist stance on this. People have the right to say what they want and if you don't like then don't eat there. If you do then chow down! Think about all the elitist progressives, feminists, and religious nuts who want to shut your business down because they don't agree with it because you're exploiting women. Imagine that.

I'm made no bones about it here on GFY. I was a bad boy, in my youth did my time. It's over.
But one place I was sent to, was an "honor camp" that was reached by driving over a dam, holding back a large lake. Driver of the van was a 'Christian' guard, who one day told the inmates, "If God directed me to drive into the lake and drown you all I would, knowing I would live or enter Heaven."
I could deal with honest guards, corrupt guards, smart guards and stupid guards. But how the fuck you deal with some idiot who thinks God told him to kill me?

Close... but not quite.

Both Nixon and Reagan would be regarded as too liberal by today's Republican standards.

True.

Especially Nixon. Most people these days tend to only think of Nixon's personality (which was famously paranoid)

But policy-wise...he was a very "liberal" Republican compared to the "religious right" ass-kissing that goes on these days.

Nixon was more into economic policies...and quite frankly wasn't scared to do govt. "take overs" of the private sector as well.
He imposed wage and price freezes in 1971 !!!

Imagine if Obama tried that now...the right would be screaming that he's a "communist". lol

Reagan didn't really give a shit about religion either. But his campaign guys figured out that there was a HUGE voting block there who would vote in step for who their preacher at church told 'em to vote for.

And the pandering of the Republican party to the "religious right" began.

I don't think Reagan actually ever DID anything that they wanted. But he talked a lot of shit they wanted to hear.

Unfortunately it built them up and now The Republican party is hardly what it used to be.

Funny thing...the REAL Mitt Romney (the one who was pro-choice and used his own judgement on a case-by-case basis for issues) was what I consider to be a real Republican.

But like all Republicans these days...he had to switch his official stand on almost everything to appease the religious right in order to get the nomination. :(

Since 1964, any food service, motel or business that serves the public must serve ALL.
America is a huge place. Takes 4 days of non-stop driving to go across. But your car may break down in some small town. How would you you like to be in a town where they refuse to let you sleep or eat as they don't want your kind?

Until the Civil Rights Act of 1964, any motel/hotel, place that served food, landlord or real estate agent could go,"well you're ********, we don't allow your kind.

It's not always a matter of taking your business elsewhere if there is no elsewhere.

You open a business, you agree to ALL the laws regulating businesses. Not just the ones you want to obey.

Chik-Fil-A doesn't refuse to serve, but they are taking money to influence congress and the states to go back to the pre-1964 days. I'd bet anything if the Civil Rights Act wasn't in place only WHITE people could eat there.
A few years back I was in Birmingham Alabama. Thought I some how got sent back to 1950.

Why do you think people are angry? What do you think this is about (from your perspective over there, is a serious question, no right or wrong answer).

You could say the same about a lot of businesses.

When you put gas in your car those energy companies use some of that money to influence Washington in an effort to get laws either passed or changed to better suit their needs. Since we are often talking about drilling for oil, natural gas or coal, sometimes these laws are at the detriment of the environment.

If you listen to a radio station that is owned by a large conglomerate like Entercom or Clear Channel you are adding to their ratings which helps them make more money. Some of that money goes towards lobbying for changes in laws and regulations that will allow them to own more media companies in individual markets which can harm the quality of the news and entertainment you have access to on the airwaves or in newspapers and on TV.

Hell, with the recent shitty supreme court ruling that says companies are people and can spend as much as they want on political contributions there are many companies who are now supporting candidates and lobbying for bills that they feel will help them make more money and I would be willing to guess you might not agree with all of their agendas.

Chik Fil-A isn't trying to change the law so they can refuse service to gay people. The owner is anti-gay marriage and it wouldn't shock me if we found out he has donated money to anti-gay marriage groups.

In the end he is fighting a losing battle. Depending on which poll you believe 45-55% of Americans support gay marriage. More importantly those numbers are up greatly from where they were just 10 years ago. Gay marriage is happening and a decade from now there will more states with legal gay marriage and the owner of Chik-Fil-A will still be against it and still taking their money if they come into one of his places.

I don't know why people do get angry, but some of them do. I live in a strange neighborhood. On one side of me I have a gay guy. On the other side of me I have this little old lady. When I moved in she was very nice and we chatted on occasion. Then the gay guy moved in. He has never hidden the fact and flies he rainbow flag on his house. I think he is a cool guy, but the little old lady was pissed. She was genuinely angry that he was living here. She even wrote a letter to the local paper warning them that the gays were taking over our small town.

Then I started dating an Asian girl. Now the little old lady doesn't talk to me because I am in an interracial relationship. I barely see her anymore. I think she is just bunkered up in her house waiting for the horrible gay guy and the hot Asian girl with the tattoos to kick her door in :)

My brothers mother in law is very anti gay and anti gay marriage. When I talk to her about it I end up pointing out that she has nothing to fear and that gay marriage will have no affect on her life and she ends up pissed off and screaming about it.

I think it has to do with fear and since they fear it they get angry as a way of defending it.

I guess I worded it wrong; I meant to ask why he thought people were angry. In the two days I hung out there I encountered zero angry people. The only "angry" people I notice are usually on Santa Monica Blvd with their God Hates Fags signs, but they are definitely fringe lunatic.

I remember when I had a Japanese g/f she used to be so aware of what [at least] she thought was people looking at us weird because it was interracial. I had never even thought about it. I dated chicks from many races beginning in the early 70's - 90's, never dawned on me that people might disapprove.

I don't really know why i said angry, i guess it was the impression i was getting but then when i read about this on the net and the last 3 pages it does not look like anyone is angry. Probably the way i was brought up from a young age when my uncle came out most of my family accepted it but not my granddad he was really angry(probably upset), wouldn't even speak to my uncle for a long time and would not let my grandmother go to there wedding.

It seems to me that most people aren't angry about gay marriage or anything related to it, but those that are, at least in my experiences, are very passionate.

In the past I have dated a couple of black girls, but this is the first time I have dated an Asian girl. Technically her mom is Japanese and her dad is Swiss, but she looks a lot like her mom only with slightly lighter skin. Interestingly enough her sister looks more white than Asian.

The situation with my neighbor was the first time in my life I ever encountered someone who disapproved of interracial relationships. There likely were others, but I was completely unaware of them.

I did have a good laugh about it. I found out about it from a different neighbor. The guy that lives across the street from me is a friend I have known for a long time. He is also the mayor of my town. My little old lady neighbor occasionally goes over to his house to complain. She complained to him about the gay guy moving in then he told me that one day he was out in the yard and she was out getting her mail so she was making small talk with him and asked him what he was doing that evening. He told her that he and his wife were going out to dinner with me and my girlfriend. She then asked if I was still seeing that "oriental" girl. When she found out I was she said she never understood interracial relationships and that if we ever got married and had children the poor babies wouldn't have any "cultural foundation."

I laughed and told him next time he talks to her he should tell her that my girlfriend is pregnant (she isn't really) and that the doctors told us it is going to be a lesbian.
