America is a huge place. Takes 4 days of non-stop driving to go across. But your car may break down in some small town. How would you you like to be in a town where they refuse to let you sleep or eat as they don't want your kind? Until the Civil Rights Act of 1964, any motel/hotel, place that served food, landlord or real estate agent could go,"well you're ********, we don't allow your kind. It's not always a matter of taking your business elsewhere if there is no elsewhere. You open a business, you agree to ALL the laws regulating businesses. Not just the ones you want to obey. |

When you put gas in your car those energy companies use some of that money to influence Washington in an effort to get laws either passed or changed to better suit their needs. Since we are often talking about drilling for oil, natural gas or coal, sometimes these laws are at the detriment of the environment. If you listen to a radio station that is owned by a large conglomerate like Entercom or Clear Channel you are adding to their ratings which helps them make more money. Some of that money goes towards lobbying for changes in laws and regulations that will allow them to own more media companies in individual markets which can harm the quality of the news and entertainment you have access to on the airwaves or in newspapers and on TV. Hell, with the recent shitty supreme court ruling that says companies are people and can spend as much as they want on political contributions there are many companies who are now supporting candidates and lobbying for bills that they feel will help them make more money and I would be willing to guess you might not agree with all of their agendas. Chik Fil-A isn't trying to change the law so they can refuse service to gay people. The owner is anti-gay marriage and it wouldn't shock me if we found out he has donated money to anti-gay marriage groups. In the end he is fighting a losing battle. Depending on which poll you believe 45-55% of Americans support gay marriage. More importantly those numbers are up greatly from where they were just 10 years ago. Gay marriage is happening and a decade from now there will more states with legal gay marriage and the owner of Chik-Fil-A will still be against it and still taking their money if they come into one of his places. |

Then I started dating an Asian girl. Now the little old lady doesn't talk to me because I am in an interracial relationship. I barely see her anymore. I think she is just bunkered up in her house waiting for the horrible gay guy and the hot Asian girl with the tattoos to kick her door in :) My brothers mother in law is very anti gay and anti gay marriage. When I talk to her about it I end up pointing out that she has nothing to fear and that gay marriage will have no affect on her life and she ends up pissed off and screaming about it. I think it has to do with fear and since they fear it they get angry as a way of defending it. |

I guess I worded it wrong; I meant to ask why he thought people were angry. In the two days I hung out there I encountered zero angry people. The only "angry" people I notice are usually on Santa Monica Blvd with their God Hates Fags signs, but they are definitely fringe lunatic. I remember when I had a Japanese g/f she used to be so aware of what [at least] she thought was people looking at us weird because it was interracial. I had never even thought about it. I dated chicks from many races beginning in the early 70's - 90's, never dawned on me that people might disapprove. Quote:

In the past I have dated a couple of black girls, but this is the first time I have dated an Asian girl. Technically her mom is Japanese and her dad is Swiss, but she looks a lot like her mom only with slightly lighter skin. Interestingly enough her sister looks more white than Asian. The situation with my neighbor was the first time in my life I ever encountered someone who disapproved of interracial relationships. There likely were others, but I was completely unaware of them. I did have a good laugh about it. I found out about it from a different neighbor. The guy that lives across the street from me is a friend I have known for a long time. He is also the mayor of my town. My little old lady neighbor occasionally goes over to his house to complain. She complained to him about the gay guy moving in then he told me that one day he was out in the yard and she was out getting her mail so she was making small talk with him and asked him what he was doing that evening. He told her that he and his wife were going out to dinner with me and my girlfriend. She then asked if I was still seeing that "oriental" girl. When she found out I was she said she never understood interracial relationships and that if we ever got married and had children the poor babies wouldn't have any "cultural foundation." I laughed and told him next time he talks to her he should tell her that my girlfriend is pregnant (she isn't really) and that the doctors told us it is going to be a lesbian. |
