Oil is very important to our economy. No oil, no economy - nothing moves. Price of oil goes up, everything goes up. In fact, the bulk of our defense policy is based on ensuring the supply of oil.
In the 1970s OPEC flexed it's muscles for whatever reason and shut down the flow. I don't remember the details but I vaguely remember having to wait in long lines to get gas. Since then, the US has moved away from the Middle East for it's oil supply. The two biggest oil supplies to the US is Canada and Mexico. And oil imports are at an all time low of 42%.
Seems we need oil from the Middle East less and less. Oh, I'm sure the cost of gas will spike up the moments the first shots are fired, but we'll live.
